Just a quick response here. For years, users have been complaining about PACE issues, and believe me, copy protection is the least interesting part of software development. We worked on a new authorization system to make both users lives easier than under PACE and permit things like the monthly subscription which allows people to start using Max without having to spend a lot of money at once.

I agree a tweet about copy protection is mostly a yawn moment as compared to the other exciting features in Max 7, and I'm sympathetic to some of the concerns expressed, but actually a significant amount of work has gone into it for the reasons I mention. Please understand that our motivations in this area haven't been from a "$++" mindset (note that we've been reducing our prices over the years, recently including Gen standard, and this upgrade is less than the price of the Max 6 upgrade), that working on our own authorization system is a new area for us, and hopefully we can continue to improve the authorization experience over time with your feedback.

If you do encounter significant issues with the new authorization system, please let us know.

now its released.. can you say what the new authorization mechanism is?

If I'm happy to upgrade, and not use Max 6, can we uninstall PACE?

Other benefits of the new model which might not be immediately obvious include easier migration of licenses between machines, and the elimination of a separate runtime, thus permitting editing operations without a license (though no saving) and 3rd party developers to debug their externals in the full environment without having to rely on the runtime version.

anyway, i was asking about authorisation, not copy protection... and in particular its reasonable as a valid (and legal) license holder for me to know about any new restrictions it may incur.

e.g. is it a one time authorisation... as i know its now online only, does this mean i can disconnect the computer after with no further 'call home', or are there other requirements?

is authorisation required for max runtime applications, or just the full Max 7.

same thing, for Max 4 Live runtime usage.

I wonder if it would be ethical to require Cycling realize how much and what kind of data can collect and transmit to the mother ship.

i use excelsoftware and it does what it says. app size is limited though (~500 MB), so mit Max7 it gets harder....
