DSLR for live video capture?
This is my first time working with Jitter, and I am having trouble finding a handy cam/ dslr that is jitter compatible.
Jitter documentation says any quicktime compatible video input device would work. Is there a list of supported cameras? in particular, i’d like to use a DSLR for live video capture with jitter.
I have a Canon 60D, Nikon D90 and a Samsung handycam, none of them seem to work.
I can only answer on the 60D, and not necessarily all that helpfully. The only live video input is out of (mini) HDMI – obviously you can’t connect that directly to your computer, but I’ve had it working through a Matrox MXO2 mini. Unfortunately it’s not ideal, as it’s not a ‘clean’ video feed – it has the viewfinder guides on it. It’s obviously intended to connect an external monitor rather than for video capture. I’ve not been able to find a way round this.
I make software with MAX and here’s a link to my camera compatibility page…
Instead of Canon2Syphon, try Camera Live (if you have Lion) because it works much better. Keep in mind that the live view feed via USB is lower resolution than HD video. The graphics overlays on some Canon DSLR’s can be turned off via the Magic Lantern firmware project, but the size of the video is not full HD while live-viewing and the quality drops to SD once you hit record on the camera.
In general, the only current DSLR(ish) camera that has a "clean" Full HD HDMI out (without graphics overlays) is the Panasonic GH2 but it has some caveats, some of which can be fixed by processing the video in Jitter. (The newer GH3 probably works better but it’s more expensive)
Most HD camcorders have clean HDMI outs which can be captured with the PCI cards (and now thunderbolt devices) from BlackMagic and Matrox. This is a good solution for most people.
I know that the video recordings on a DSLR camera is less than 30 minutes. It is possible, with Canon2syphon, use the camera without pause for an hour or more in maxmsp? The camera should be recording or or simply must be on? I am thinking in a T3i.
Until now I am using a camera HD Logitech c920, webcam, with a resolution of 956 X 620 and it work well, but some times Max not recognize the camera, I don’t konw why.. and I need to use it in performance.
Thank you very much
This will differ per camera. You should be able to info this info on the interwebz.
Alternatively, some camera’s have been hacked to remove that 30min limit (Canon http://www.magiclantern.fm/, Panasonic http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/ and more). It’s just a matter of uploading a new firmware to the cam.
That is very interesting, I didn’t know that is possible to do it.
Then, to obtain the image from a Canon camera in maxmsp, with Canon2syphon, the camera must be recording or just in mode on?..
I am trying both Camera Live and Canon2Syphon. Both seem to work but I can’t get anything in Jitter.
When I send getvdevlist or getinputlist to jit.qt.grab or jit.grab, they only see my laptop’s built-in camera.
Any idea why it wouldn’t work?
