Maybe it is because I updated to Windows 10. There is something wrong with the drivers. I can select a different MME driver, but Max continues to use the default MME driver.

...I tried with Max 7.06, and it works fine. What has changed to affect the audio driver in Max 7.2?

I found the problem. Some MSP objects now hang if they receive multiple messages for the same parameter simultaneously., Sorry for the multiple posts, I was a bit panicked.

has something changed to make the display sluggish?
