I'm making a visualiser for anything I do in ableton live, but I'm stuck on inter patch audio transport. I want to use send~/receive~ to transport the audio between patches, as I do with send/receive for normal max messages. I found a workaround by using plugsend~, but max only reads this in live.

Is there a way to get send~ working like send does?

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be supported for the moment and according to this thread

What about running Max as a rewire client and sending the audio via the rewire~. That won't give you direct access to your patches but you can send audio directly from to Live.
