manchester max/msp meet-up [try again]

lewis lepton's icon

hello all,

this post is for maxers living near or in manchester, uk

i tried to organise [badly, one because i was just busy with work] a meet-up of maxers in manchester, which did not happen, sadly.
but now i would really like to have another go of it. i just think it would be one way to get our own click of max users coming together and doing some little performances.
what i am planning first of all is a meet up at a cafe/restaurant or something in town. where we can just sit down and have a chat of how we can do this.

i said before about the nexus cafe [based in the northern quarter]. which would take us. we just have to pay to rent out the place/pa system/projector. quite cheap. i think it was £10 an hour for the projector and p.a., i could be wrong but am emailing the place now to ask about pricing [if changed]
we can, if we wanted, to charge tickets so people could come and watch, sort of like a gig, but a max gig.

recently i have been making more and more max music, and releasing albums as well, and would just want to take this a little further and finally do something live.
if anyone is interested, we can sort out a meet and greet, for coffee/cake/ideas sometime when suitable for everyone else, and at a suitable location in manchester.
currently i am doing studies, but am in on tuesdays and thursdays, and also go in on other days to use the equipment, but can sort something out.
also i am away from the 16th december until the 9th january, in italy.

if you want to get hold of me, you can reach me on email: lewis[a]smokingbunny[dot]co[dot]uk

i really would like to get this done, hopefully to start something after christmas and new year.

i am still up for it

lewis lepton's icon

awesome, try and get a few more and then sort something out.

maxmspwned's icon

This sounds ace. I'm in.

lewis lepton's icon

sweet, another to join.
think would need around say 8-10 people [but more are welcomed :D]. they dont all have to be max/msp people, but can be jitter folk as well, the more the merrier.

was at the cirque du manc on the friday [at the dry bar], and had been talking to a few people about doing a gig for myself for the next cirque du manc after im back from italy], which seemed to go well. but i think could even ask for a whole max/msp/jitter night, as long as we get enough interest.

David Butler's icon

I'd be up for this, based in Lancaster at the moment.

Mike S's icon

i wandered past dry bar on friday! i'm a little busy at the mo, but count me in.

maxmspwned's icon

Any news on this? More Takers!!!

lewis lepton's icon

sorry been away for a long weekend home at the folks [had an early christmas as i wont see them, through the holidays.
so far just seems to be the people who have answered on here.

strimbob's icon

why dont we do it at madlab?

i am heading there to night will find out some stuff

maxmspwned's icon

Good stuff strimbob.

Lewis - It might be easier with fewer to begin with anyway.

I reckon we just pub it and see what happens. Does everyone have google accounts?

lewis lepton's icon

aye, i do always try and look at things in a bigger sense sometimes. madlab looks cool.
i do have a google account, mainly used for rubbish.

maxmspwned's icon

I've set up a google group if it helps. Not sure if everyone has a google account though. Do you want to meet at mad lab or put a show on there?

lewis lepton's icon

i have joined it.
madlab sounds cool, for a show or meet up, which ever really. though i think maybe we could meet up first and talk about what we could do and how it would go down? how does that sound?
maybe just a drink or food and have a chat. maybe deaf institute or something, whatever.

just to remind you all, i will be away from this friday until the 9th january [day before my birthday :)], i will be over in italy with some family for the holidays. so we could meet up before that, or after i am back, though you can also meet up with one another if you you want to in the mean time. im easy.
but will be mildy busy through the week, a lot to get through, mostly through-out the days what with studies and readying to go away.
i will be taking my laptop with me as well, just to keep up to tabs, typing up my project, recording some of italy and building websites and trying to get my performance patch tip-top. so should be able to still organise something.

strimbob's icon

i could possible meet up on wednesday at the deaf institute at 630, but not for long, and mad busy on Thursdays

lewis lepton's icon

sorry i wont be around, off to italy tomorrow. but hope to catch up with you all very soon after i am back.
in the mean time, i have set up a bandcamp page of the max music i have been making for some time, but really sat down and pounded out three albums worth of music [actually more than that but didnt want to go TOO overboard :)]
but this is basically what i was going to be doing when we did do something
www.operand.bandcamp.com

also set up a facebook fan page, just thought i may as well really. :D
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Operand/184821684864969

have fun through-out the new year, and see you all next year :D

well, i am back. actually i arrived back on the 9th, quite tired from travelling for about 12 hours, lovely. but the trip was great, love italy, great food and wine. cheap for that stuff. hope you all had a great grimbo and new year too.
then mildly enjoyed my birthday yesterday. i say mildly because it was a monday, not much to do, save it for the weekend or something. but did pick up my new [second hand] uc-33 from the post office.

anyhow, did any of you meet up at all yet? are we still on for meeting up sometime? will we still do the madlab, have a few people interested in coming to watch if its possible.

anyhow, speak soon...

Howdie, I'd definitely be up for this. I tried organizing something like this a few years ago or so and we met up a couple of times but it faded away.

A possible place could be MadLab:
http://madlab.org.uk/

They have all sorts of diy/hacky group meetups there and it's a free/open community space.

lewis lepton's icon

after being sacked from my job, i am back on track with music in general and max works. but am still up for it, its just the times etc that i think can become a problem. and did get side tracked recently with gigs as well

i think i would just meet somewhere, for a drink or something for the time being and plan out. but up for it.

Medd's icon

I've lived in Swinton for about 7 weeks and I'd like to meet some local Max-ers. I'd be happy just to meet up for a drink (Common is just opposite MadLab and the beer is ace).

Rodrigo's icon

I'm up for that. Something in the next week or two would be fantastic as school/work both start back up for me in September.

Medd's icon

I'll be busy again with university in September too but I don't mind having additional things going on! Any other Manchester Max people interested too?

Rodrigo's icon

Do you guys just want to have a small meetup? I have a couple of friends who would likely be interested in coming too (at least two).

Medd's icon

Sounds cool to me. I'm pretty flexible for the foreseeable future so just let me know when you're thinking and I'll see what I can do. I'm sure I'll probably be out-Maxed by most of you although I'd be keen to hear different individuals' experiences. It's probably a good way to learn some new stuff!

EDIT: I've also started following you on Twitter Rodrigo. I'm considering if there's a different place we can organise meetings too, just so as not to clog up the forum so much. Is the Google group mentioned earlier in the thread still in existence?

Rodrigo's icon

I definitely won't be out-maxing anybody! I'm shit at it! Well, I decide to "finally learn it" every few years, and each time I learn more, but then I forget a bunch. I'm in my 3rd (or is it 4th?) time doing this....

How about some point next week? Are you guys in the city centre? If you're a bit more south we can maybe meet up in Fuel in withington. The upstairs is generally empty in the afternoon/evenings.

Medd's icon

City centre's easier for me. I mostly lurk around the northern quarter but I know a pub in Salford (about a 30 second walk from Salford Central station) that's usually got a quiet room during the week. (The King's Arms)

I'm fairly flexible though, any other preferences?

Rodrigo's icon

Nope city centre is fine. I was just checking the offchance that everyone would be driving/busing in just for this.

Medd's icon

So, is anyone around in the next couple of weeks? Are strimbob and Lewis Edwards still up for this too? My schedule is flexible so I can work around everyone else's plans to make things easier.

Mike S's icon

Hello folks,

I met with Hwa Young Jung recently. She's the director at MadLab, a place for workshops and meetups in Manchester's Northern Quarter.

We've organised a meetup for the 21st of November from 7PM to 9PM.

MadLab's address is: 36-40 Edge Street, Manchester, M4 1HN (opposite Common bar).

I imagined it could be a bit of a show and tell, people could talk about what they're working on, or get feedback on work, or whatever comes to mind! The aim is to have a dedicated space where users, or anyone with interest in Max from the northwest can meet regularly (monthly/bimonthly) and get inspired about what others are doing.

MadLab will be doing some publicity also, so we should have some people who don't read the forum coming as well.

Rodrigo's icon

That's a good idea and I'll be there.

I really like MadLab and Hwa Young is real nice (I did a circuit-bending workshop there a couple years ago).

I tried going to the HacMan night a few times, but stopped after the exhausting feeling of people doing the "I know more than you about this, and I'm going to make that VERY clear as I explain this simple thing you're asking about" thing. Which is a shame, as I really like the idea of a hackspace and surrounding community. They just can't be dicks....

lewis lepton's icon

ill be as well. STILL have not been to madlab, but do have a few things that im doing at the moment that id like to show.
dont worry, im not a big head with things, i like to show what things do, its fun. but i dont always give patches out if i feel they are not finished or its a work thing. but do give patches of random fun and other things.
have ran into a few 'i know more' people in the last month, was a bit annoying.

lewis lepton's icon

ooh. forgot to say.
im vjing at islington mill this saturday [with jitter and lemur] for 'bohemian grove halloween party', with dj spider.

here is the link for tickets if you fancy. £10
http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?406653

may see you there

Mike S's icon

Quick bump for anyone that missed this.

Tonight from 7-9PM.

36-40 Edge Street, Manchester, M4 1HN.

Rodrigo's icon

I'll be there!

Medd's icon

Not sure how I managed to miss this! Cue scrambling for patches to bring tonight!

Rodrigo's icon

Of all people, I expected to see you there!

lewis lepton's icon
