Max 5 Pluggo-building feature request
Like all good Max spelunkers, I long ago explored the hidden Pluggo
caverns known as /bonus-externs. For anyone who creates their own
Pluggos and doesn’t know about these, Cycling has an illuminating
article on a few of the extremely useful externals found in this
directory. Check it out at http://www.cycling74.com/story/
I once rolled my own abstractions to cover the jobs [ddg.beatsync],
[ddg.exclusive] and [gang] do. They were not nearly as solid as the
bonus externs. Especially in the case of [ddg.beatsync], my
abstractions have never been even close. And in a whole new realm,
[buildassist] makes external file inclusion during the build process
In the web link above, Andrew Pask states: "Please feel free to use
any of this in your own work. There is only one caveat – all of this
stuff is unsupported and may change at any time."
Given the super-useful nature of the above externals, I’d like to
request they, or something functionally like them, be made a
supported part of the Pluggo-building tools in Max 5 (Pluggo 4?).
Please? If you can be bribed, I’ll even bring some good beer of your
choice to the new Cycling office!

some of these objects are really useful, and would take the pain out of building specific parts for pluggo.
i also like the chaos-navier-stokes object! there use to be other objects which provide this type of random data… but cant find one that’s UB!
+1 for the addition to max5.

Yep – ass covering manoeuvre. None of this stuff is really likely to change as far as the 4.6.x branch goes. So you’ll always have it around.

Beer is always welcome. You might find you gain a whole new group of friends. But then again probably none of them would end up in the right mindset for maintaining the code in bonus-externs.

well, my point was more to do with these pluggo bonus externals – which would be an asset if they were included as part of the distribution rather than as hidden secret objects.
and now i have checked maxobjects again i see andre sier appears to have updated his library:
altho’ it states it’s UB on maxobjects, i cant get them to load on an intel mac with maxmsp 4.6.2.
error message states it cant load old cfm externals – that to me points out that these are not UB.
so maybe it’s not quite that easy…
So I’ve taken some initiative here and typed Andre’s
name into a search engine. Lo and behold, web pages
with what appear to be more recently updated things:
Not quite as easy, but perhaps useful.
Oh – wait – that’s the second reference in maxobjects.com
The UB stuff here works fine in 10.4.9/most recent
binary on my Pro.
sarcasm aside – the point of my post was to highlight the usefulness of these pluggo bonus objects. but clearly you seem to be more interested in condescending and / or patronising humor, which i fail to find amusing or informative.
if you have a view on the usefulness of these objects then please state it. failing that, take some initiative and find something better to do with your time.

seems to work ok on ppc.
I’m perhaps too narrowly focused here. I’ll assume that you DO now have some Chaos objects for your UB pursuits. You’re welcome.
Your other request has been noted, but things remain as Andrew originally described them, at the moment.

They work jes’ fine for my purposes. A nice painless transfer with my MacIntel for my projects. Perhaps it would be helpful to add a link to your share page that mentions the beta UB stuff, just in case people don’t look any farther than the first maxobjects.com listing.
Thanks for your work on these objects, by the way. It’s great to have them.

thanks for the input. i mentionned it also because i found (and
fixed) a lot of problems in the current beta of my a-objects
colection. nothing like pressing gigs with new machines to sparkle
things in motion.
many thanks for the input. hope they lead you in some nice
