Max 6 crashes randomly
I'm having regular crashes with max 6. They happen randomly while patching (connecting objects), aprox between 10 and 60 minutes after starting max. It's not depending on a certain patch, but most of the time working in gen~. Also I'm not using any 3rd party objects.
It's on max 6.0.3, mac os 10.6.8 and it happens on both of my computers (powerbook and iMac), both having different sound cards.
I did contact support about a week ago, but apart from one initial mail (trash your preferences, reinstall max, send your crash reports) I did not get a single reply after that, even after sending tons of crash reports.
So I wonder if anyone here has experienced a problem like this and knows solutions or things to look into?
Any help deeply appreciated, thanks, Joerg
Same here (also with X.6.8) . My Max6 experience is extremely unsatisfying so far. Many crashes a day (almost none when using Max5) while doing simple things (like saving, patching, etc.). All of them unfortunaltely unreproductible, so I didn't contact c74's support yet.

I've been having the same problem (mainly on save/open) several times a day since 6.0.1.
All unreproducable too.
same problem here on windows 7. Max crash a lot during a session of work. Especially when a gen object is involve. And even at some point Max was not booting...So I had to trash all my preferences files to make it boot again. Now i'm using the full version of Max 6, before I was using max for live with version 5 of Max on a cheap vista 32-bit computer and I can count on my fingers the number of time max crashed. Now with a good computer and Max 6, crash is almost part of the routine...
Thanx Ben
The only one thing I can see is that everytime I start max I have this error on my Console (on a Mac open the Console Program in Applications/Utilities and look at the Section "Console-Messages" ore something like that).
08.02.12 20:51:19 [0x0-0x72072].com.cycling74.Max[608] Max(608,0xa0b5e540) malloc: *** error for object 0x178c9000: pointer being freed was not allocated
But that could be of course something completly different too.
The other thing I realize that most of the time it crashes when I got something patched together that is quite good and almoooost ready, like just a few clicks before I would hit Save :-(
But at least I'm not alone. Cold Comfort.
Yeah I'm in xp 32 bit 6.03 and it crashes a lot. It'll get better but right now it's about as much as fun as developing in pd.
Yup, I've gone back to 5. I'll give 6 another go when it gets to 6.1.
I have had sufficient issues in the past that I"ve also gone back to 5.1.9
Question: I have some clients for whom I'm building some Max-based software. They will need to buy Max. Is it still possible to get 5.1.9?
you can download v5, but you'll have to buy version 6.
Of course, I just didn't know if it would still be available and if a license for it could be obtained at this point.
licenses for 5 aren´t available, but asking the same i was told that you can use lower versions with newest license.
Haven't had a lot of problems before, but now since i started to look into gen mor,
same here, frequent crashes when working in gen,

ditto - having regular crashes here in gen~ when patching (with audio off). usually when holding shift and fanning patch cables. not clearly reproducible though unfortunately.

Yesterday I was crashing non-stop just editing a simple file. 3 crashes in 10 minutes. Super frustrating!
Anyone know where the preferences are to be deleted on Lion? There's no library folder in the user folder anymore (or so it seems).
Hold while clicking on 'Go' in the finder. The library folder will be in the list.
yves
So just delete everything in user/library/preferences/max (or whatever the folder is called with max stuff in it)?
That's a cool trick (holding alt when pressing 'go'). The folder in there is called "Max 5 Preferences Folder". Is that still the preferences for Max6? (I still have Max5 on this computer)
It's now in ~/Library/Application Support/Cycling '74
And I just delete the entire contents of that folder? Or just the file called maxpreferences.maxpref?
Anyone know? I don't want to delete the wrong thing(s) by accident.
I would trash the whole Cycling '74 folder (if you're afraid, just zip the folder before trashing it).

Easy enough. Hopefully this curbs my crash happy max.
you can still set your finder to open showing your hard drive in Lion, so you can access the library etc. It's just not the default anymore as Apple obviously thinks most of its users don't know anything about computers....which is probably true :)
I'm also having issues with Max 6.0.3 on Windows 7 crashing, it seems to be related to my use of the gen~ object.
I too am having sporadic crashing with 6.0.4 on Windows 7, and it seems to happen when I am using gen~.
I'm also having crashing issues with Max 6.1.9 on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.
Specifically when I try to open the Bark~ object and when I try to operate Beat~'s help file...
Although it's started crashing more frequently now, like when I'm changing the audio preferences. Really frustrating. Tried wiping max and reinstalling it, to no avail. Sent off a support mail but no reply yet :(
