Max in Special Needs Education
I love Max for installation/performance purposes but I’m also employed in a special needs school where creating interactive, sensory and teaching tools using Max is my day job… and I count my blessings every day! Its such a fantastic tool set to quickly whip up a particular patch that works perfectly for a particular child’s needs or to create more involved interactive scenarios for the whole school to use.
Anyways, I just uploaded a demo video of some of the stuff we’re doing with Max and thought some of you might be interested in seeing how Max works in this context as its something I hadn’t really given much thought to before I started working here. Its a competition entry for the Guardian Classroom Innovation Awards so I’m sneakily canvassing for votes too!! When I’ve got a more permanent home for the video I’ll post the link, but meanwhile:
Luke, this is very inspiring! by all means keep us posted.
This is AMAZING!! Thank you for all you do!
Great work :D
So shines a good deed in a weary world.
this is so great! I worked with special need children too (not with interactive installation) and this is such a wonderful experience for them and makes all the difference to them.
Thanks for sharing..it’s inspiring!
this is amazing stuff luke. i have also worked with special needs children/teens, and giving up your services to see the positive and enjoyable reactions is possibly the most rewarding thing you can ask receive.
give yourself a pat on the back.
Well thanks for all the kind words and I’m glad people are interested. This is an ever evolving project and there’s plenty more to come so I’ll keep you posted!
I’m currently doing a PhD in "creative interaction design for musicians with cerebral palsy", and have worked in this field for over ten years; I’d be very interested to learn more about your experiences – if you’d like to chat PM me.

what can i say but amazing mate. I work with adults with special needs and have spent many a (matchstick in the eyeballs) hour trying to stay awake to lights that are only a few notches above fairy lights on a christmas tree. were as your installation looks amazing have you thought about going national with your project. it may not be best time at moment due to public sector looking like a sinking ship but the benefits of this are well worth going national even universal. long live public care its the only reason im proud to be british. keep up the amazing work.
Hi Luke–cool stuff!
I’ve done a similar project here in the states called EAMIR (www.eamir.org). Thanks for posting this–and please keep us posted.
