i was thinking about this whole doing some patching and was wondering whether the max/msp book from 

will this be updated for the upcoming max 6 at all?

i have been thinking deeply about buying the first volume, but was wondering whether there would actually be any point in doing so as max 6 is just round the corner.

i have contacted the cats who made it so will wait for a reply. but just putting it up here on the off chance of them seeing this first

I doubt there's much in the first book which will not apply to Max 6. It tends to use either the core objects, which I doubt are going to change or the dedicated set of macros which come with the book (and I imagine these will be updated with Max 6 if necessary).

I've been learning Max for 2-3 years after coming from a sound design background and have found the book very useful indeed. It's one of the most thoughtfully arranged technical books I've come across. Perhaps it wouldn't be so useful for someone very experienced and knowledgeable, but is great for the rest of us. I believe the set are going to gradually increase in complexity.

Would also be great to hear more about the next volume.

Hey Lewis - as Mark says, you should be fine diving into the first volume, as it is based upon fundamentals that are very unlikely to change in Max 6. If the macros or examples for the book were to need work because of versioning issues, they would be updated online.

alright... well as i said i sent an email to the cats at virtual sound just incase, and did get a reply. here is what it says.

the authors are now working at the volume 2, which will be max-6-ready.

After the second volume is out, they will update the first vol. to max 6: this will probably happen next year.

so seems like it will happen. just will be on the back burner just now.

it is indeed. i will wait until the first is put to max 6. but will get the second one when that comes out.

i would love to get it now, but feel i could lose something from the max 5/6 changeover, maybe. but will wait for it.

but am looking forward to the second as it will go to a further look into sound based patching, like dynamics and the such. will be good.

I've been quite curious about this book. The used market is pretty small for it and it's a bit expensive so I've not made the jump yet, particularly since libraries don't seem to have it in order to give it a test drive. (I'd hate to buy an expensive book that is not what I was looking for)

I wanted to have a look at this book for my Masters project, but was amazed to find there was only one copy in the whole of the British Library collection*. I put in a request for it, but it came back as 'unavailable'.

My job is based in a University Library, so I was able to ask proper librarians, and they confirmed that this one copy was not available for inter-library loan for some reason.

So, if you're reading this Alessandro or Maurizio, and you want this book to get some more exposure, as I'm sure it deserves, perhaps you should consider donating a few copies to some UK universities, to get it onto their library catalogues,

* that said, I could only find a single copy of Curtis Roads' 'Microsound' - and I wasn't even allowed to take that out of the library to read it!

FWIW, my book published by Oxford University Press is, in fact, Max 6 ready and will be released in two weeks. The book is more of a text book on using Max/MSP/Jitter and would be well-suited in a classroom for undergrads interested in learning Max to create develop interactive systems.
