"MaxMSP has stopped working"

Oskari's icon

Hello,

Something happened and now every time I start MaxMSP I get message "MaxMSP has stopped working" and it shuts down before it even starts.

I've tried to remove it and reinstall new version, but I still haven't been able to find out what causes this problem.

There is no new hardware installed recently or new updates and I I have no idea how to solve this problem (this occurs with version 5.0.5 and 5.0.6 both).

Maybe someone has solved this problem earlier?

Hey, I have a Mac running Max/MSP so I can't tell you exactly what to do, but I have had similar problems and managed to solve them in a couple of ways. First, I don't know if there is similar to something like this in Windows, but I ran Disk Utility and repaired the permissions on my hard disk and restarted and that fixed it. Also, once I made a patch and accidentally gave it the same name as an existing Max object. The program wouldn't even start but when I renamed that patch everything was fine. Finally, I have found with some programs that if you have .plst files from older versions laying around on your hard drive that can confuse the system. On a mac you can find them in /Users/[name]/library/preferences and in /library/preferences. Hope this helps and good luck!

Hello,

Thank you so much about your message!

I tried to find settings from registry, but they were located in "C:Users[UserName]AppDataRoamingCycling '74Max 5 Preferences Files". After renaming this folder to "asdf" MaxMSP started fine and created new settings files which do not crash it.

Thank you one more time and I wish you have a nice Sunday there!

hI am having this problem too, but the fix described does not work for me. Max crashes before making the prefs folder. Also on Vista ultimate. Faulting module in the system log is kernel32.dll.

Max 5.0.5 worked fine on this system, as did 5.0.6 right after installation.

FIXED: turned off DEP for Max. Another video program was having the same problem, I suspect a bad codec somewhere.

hi, I am using Max 5.0.7 on a Sony Vaio Laptop (NS20E) with Windows Vista Home Premium (service pack 1) and an external soundcard, which is an ESI MAYA 44 USB.

I have the latest drivers for Windows Vista and my soundcard, but I'm having major problems running MaxMSP 5 for any length of time. It crashes every few minutes, or less. It seems to crash whether I have audio running or not, but more often with audio running. I've tried optimising my laptop to give priority to Background Services and I've turned off all the graphics/animated things Vista does. I've also edited MSConfig so that only the essential programs are running, as far as I know.

Max 5 + my Maya 44 soundcard worked fine on my previous Sony Vaio Laptop (which was half the spec of this one and was running Windows XP).

I've also searched the forum archives and can't find anything specific that solves this problem. Perhaps there are some obvious things that all Vista users have to do when they install Max 5, that I'm just not aware of??

Can anybody help me with this?

I am looking to use Max 5 for a college performance next week and really need it to work asap. Although it maybe possible for me to borrow an Apple Mac for the performance, I'd really like to get this sorted for future performances and patch building.

Cheers in advance!
Martman

PS. here's the beginning of my patch. I have done more since this, but even this basic patch is causing random crashes:

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

If you change audio drivers does it still crash?

Hi Andrew, the patch I copied earlier (the basic loop thing) is now running OK, bizarrely, but this patch crashes after a few seconds with my MAYA external soundcard and lasts just over 3 minutes with my internal/standard 'directsound' soundcard drivers:

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

So yea, it still crashes after I change the soundcard drivers.

If you increase your buffer size in DSP status, does it still crash or take longer to crash?

I've tried changing Signal Vector Size in DSP Status before and ticked Overdrive and it didn't seem to make any difference.

It might be the patch, but it's hard to tell, there seemed to be a bpatcher missing.

When I opened it I saw a message "resize buffer randomly" or something.

You have to be pretty careful with that sort of thing. If you try and access a buffer while it is being resized your party will come to an end extremely quickly. This is where I'd start looking for the trouble.

Yea, more and more I'm thinking it's a patch thing, as I've been playing with another older patch for a while now and I'm not getting problems at all. Or maybe I'm just lucky right now... Time will tell.

Thanks for your help!

I am getting the same "...has stopped working" message, when I attempt to do ANYTHING after the program has launched - even access the help menu. I am running Max 5 in WinXP, SP2, with a RME Fireface soundcard for which I have the latest drivers. the machine is offline but I have installed Java and Quicktime as advised on the C74 site. perhaps there is something very basic I can change to get it working.

Ultimately I want to run Max4Live and am wondering if I should simply wait for that to be available before I spend significant time getting to the bottom of this. I did try the Max/MSP 5.1 beta, including the "repair" option, but that did not solve the problem.

Any advice from anyone?

Thanks for your attention,
a true newbie,
Hal

I think this is since the last vista automatic update.
