Midi envelope?

Is it me, or is there an envelope applied to noteout by default? This seems to be what I'm hearing (a decay, at least). If this is the case, does it come from MS MIDI (on windows) or Max? If from Max, can I control it?

This is the default MS Midi piano bank I'm referring to.

Short answer: yes

The GM synth sounds all have a preset ADSR envelope, which you can alter by sending sustain/damper CC64 (=64 on) out of Max to the MS synth. "On" restricts the decay portion until an "off" is received. Of course, how this affects a sound depends on the GM program setting; for example 'marimba' won't sustain.

There are further CC#'s for attack and decay, but I've never used them; I think they have to be addressed in a more specific way than just sending the relevant CC#+value.
