I've searched around on these forums and found several threads with my issue but no solutions that helped my problem! Essentially, I am trying to work through "MIDI Tutorial 1: Basic MIDI," but I can't even get sound out of the basic noteout object setup. Other threads suggest that there is a problem with the AU DLS Synthesizer (although to be honest I do not fully understand what that is). I have looked into my computer's (Mac OSX 10.6.8) MIDI preferences and enabled "IAC driver." Now "IAC Driver Bus 1" is an option when I double-click on the noteout object but that doesn't seem to work either. I am running Max 5.0.6.

I am totally new to MaxMSP, as well as to using MIDI, so I could really use some help! Thanks so much!

"if you are running Mac OS X 10.6 or higher (Snow Leopard), than you need Max Msp 5.08 or higher to use AU DLS Synth."

So you really need to update to the latest version of Max 5, which is 5.1.7
