I'm writing an MSP external where certain messages can only be handled when audio is not running. Because of this, I need to know not only when audio is turned on (which calls our dsp64 method) but also when it has been turned off again. Is there a way to get notified of audio being turned off? Preferably through a callback but a polling function would be OK if not.

Maybe not what you're after, but one simple way:

[dspstate~] into [change] could then call a custom function in your external that switches a bool or on off. This will happen in the Max thread though. Presumably, there will be no process function called for audio whilst it is off.

a 'dspstatus' message is sent to your object, when the dsp state is toggled.

to catch that, you should create a message binding like this:

class_addmethod(c, (method)myObj_dspstate, "dspstate", A_CANT, 0);

and declare the function "myObj_dspstate" (and what it's supposed to do) yourself.
