So when i make a vst, i see hoe presets are made with the bang and the plug config etc etc. i have just a regular max patch with a few knobs that i want to be at certain settings everytime i open it. what does this so i can read up on it, i cant find it in the documentation. thanks!

well, if you wanna make your own style presets with vst~, I suggest using the "get" message and storing things in coll. you can also query the number of parameters, and then "get param_min" to "get param_max", zl store, then slam them into a coll prepended by the number of the preset. Use coll to iterate vst~ through the parameters. I believe they come out of the 4th outlet.

that would be [preset] and [pattr] - but you can also abuse

[pp] with [plugconfig] in a regular patch, not a problem.

so i have my presets working jsut fine, with the preset object, but how can i make it load preset 1 automatically when i start the patch...

You'll bonk your forehead when you read how easy this is. You did look at the preset help file right? Send a loadbang to a message box with the number 1 in it and send that into the left inlet (the only inlet) of the preset object. Like so:
