slow max startup/overall performance
my PB is two and a half years old, 1.25 GHz, 512 Mb ram. Max startup is
taking so long, my teachers got concerned about the state of my
Computer. What factors can cause such a slow startup? Too many folders
in the searchpath? My moderate ram? Or should i try running iDefrag
over the HD? Or just completely reinstall the whole thing from 0? Which
i don’t really have time for because of the massive backup i’d have to
Any experiences and tips?
Try checking the scope of the search path first of all. Back in the
ancient days, it was a bad idea to have aliases in your search path; I
don’t think this is true anymore, but if you had an alias to say
"Macintosh HD" in your Max search path, then it’d definitely slow
Yes, the number of items in your search path can definitively
increase launch time. Try to remove them and see if it changes. I
know that on my old G4 466, it makes a huge difference.
Particularly, if a a distant volume (external HD, USB key, etc) is in
your search path, Max can keep searching for it if it’s not connected.
Also, check & repair permissions won’t hurt.
Just few thoughts. hth,

It has never been a "bad idea" per se to have aliases in your search
patch. Tthere are many good reasons to use aliases here. The problem
is (a) when aliases point to a network volume that is not mounted and
(b) when aliases point to a network volume that isn’t even available.
Also, if you have an insane total number of folders in your search
path, that will impact start up time. It may be tempting to include
your main hard disk or desktop in your search path ("There! Max’ll
find everything I ever need!") but it’s not a smart thing to do.
In short: aliases are fine. But think a second about which aliases
