When I use the string "Text" in umenu, the object will show a
keyboard shortcut (alt-command N) on the right. Somehow Max seems to
confuse the umenu entry with its own menu (File->New->Text).

Yes, that’s strange. And also:
(1)/w –> [prepend append] –> umenu
displays a shortcut but it is grayed out… ?
