A student wants the answer to be 42 and nothing but 42 (This is the answer to questions on life. I did not know this joke.) I can do this in Processing (^42$) but this does not work in max.

regexp "42" will match 42, but also He is 42 and 4200 and 142, etc.

regexp ^42$ does not match anything I tried EXCEPT "42" but I would rather not require users to type that into a textedit box. 42 in a message object does not work.

[tosymbol] works of course but there's a more general issue here. If you send 42 by itself it is seen as an integer. However, in the context of a regexp, should not a single integer be converted to a string when it arrives since it's not really meaningful to process a non string item?
