Windows XP Max and whine

Hello all,

I have searched the forum and I can find issues with MBP creating a whine (and the workaround of setting slepp to 0), but I am not finding any equivalent topics for the PC side of things.

I am running a 16 channel sound piece using two external sound cards. the driver I am using is ASIO4All V2 on a Windows XP Profesional tower. The sound cards connect to four separate amps that then run the 16 speakers. On initial boot and while running Windows Media Player, there is no whine in the speakers. When I start up Max/MSP application there is a faint but still quite noticeable high pitched whine that seems to kick in when ASIO4All is loaded. The whine persists even when all of the channels have been muted using controls in the patch. The whine is still apparent using direct sound. It goes away with ad_mme (but then of course I can't play any sounds. The whine goes away when I close Max.

Has anyone else run into this issue and did you find a way to solve it?

Thanks for any suggestions
