Touch Screens with Max/MSP/Jitter
Hi,
I have a current project building a MIDI Interface/Performance patch in Max/MSP
I have little knowledge of Jitter/Video but am thinking of using a touch screen panel in my interface to connect to my laptop.
Does anyone know if it is possible in Jitter to output to dirctly output to a seperate video out on my laptop running to the touch screen and also If a touch screen could supply a suitable input to max? Is it just a like a PS2 like mouse input?
This is only a rough idea so Im trying to see if it is worth me puchasing a touch screen+ jitter to try it out?
Any Ideas would be great
Thanks,
Chris

Yes. this is possible. you will have to set the touchscreen as your
first (startup) screen otherwise you will receive wrong mouse
coordinates. all touchscreens I used had USB connections. No PS2

Maybe you try it with the Jitter demo.

Hi,
I am also getting interested in touchscreens.
Does somebody know a company with cheap but good working touchscreens for usb?
thanks, grzz, b
Hi,
I have recently bought one of e-bay. Can't say how good it is yet as it hasn't arrived but it seemed reasonable value. If you look on the B-Billion store on e-bay they have quite a few different examples of small touch screens with various connections.

I just got a touchscreen from
and it's really fantastic, I wish I'd gotten it years ago (though I'm sure they're cheaper these days). It works on up to 21" monitors--mine's a 19" so it hangs over, but you can of course calibrate. $300 is a bit steep, but if you're going for smaller ones they're quite a bit less...
If you're into Max / Jitter, having a touchscreen is great, since you can customize the interface however you want. In fact, having it has made my patches look a heck of a lot cleaner and get stripped to the more bare necessities (using larger buttons and controls), which has been a really good learning experience design-wise.
Also, using things like the multislider becomes a whole new experience---not only can you do "gestural" things so much better, you can actually "fake" pressure sensitivity (which these touchscreens technically cannot do) --- if you use two fingers, modifying the pressure gently between them allows interesting "sliding" or stuttering back and forth.... the screen is interpolating and comes up with a single value, and the different pressures can be used to control where it ends up. Very cool. (Single-point pressure has no effect unless the screen is designed for this---most aren’t.)
The accuracy is decent for fingers, excellent with a stylus (or fingernails). I want to make some little add-ons for my fingers so the tips are more like a stylus; maybe put some little plastic knobs on the end of gloved fingertips. My first step to becoming a Borg.
Having an overlay or add-on as opposed to the touchscreen being built-in isn't as clean of a look, but you can take it to other computers, and they’re generally cheaper I think.....
Most screens simply emulate the mouse. USB is probably the way to go these days.
Highly recommended, particularly for this program!

hi, im new to max/msp and currently working on a midi interface for my live setup. the patcher involves program changes and control changes, and im also looking at capacitive devices. i woulkd love to be able to use max/msp on a touchscreen, in a live situation, so much easier than running to all instruments for the next song.
ive tried and posted queries on the forum, and at the moment the feedback is, max/msp doesnt work with touchscreen devices, im taking about small phone touchscreens, but 10" models like acer and advent.
before i take out the cash i need to know if it would work, if it is possable to get max/msp and the interface, working with a touchscreen tablet. it would be an amazing devise to use, especially for live, and also open mazny other options for my setup, ie -(midi controllers and realtime editing)
im currently looking for the right tablet to get, and theres the thing of windows, android, and how all this works.
hope you can help me out.
best regards - rob
Fantastick is a great app that I have had a lot of success with on my iphone. I bought c74 but was unable to get it going. If you had an ipad, Fantastick would be great, the ability to be away from your computer while controlling your patch is amazing. It works best if you use a dedicated wifi network, but works great over any wifi.
My dream is to use one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824217140 to build a massive touch interface.
