Trick to avoid infinite loop between live.observer and live.remote~?

I am doing some special mapping between Push's grid buttons and parameters on Live devices. Is there a better way to avoid an infinite loop between live.observer and live.remote~ without stopping having to program a bool or gate to determine the source of the event in order to stop the signal chain?
If programming a bool/gate is the way to go, what is the best way to do that? I need to access the global bool from several patcher instances. I'm coming from a conventional programming background where I would set a global like "EVENT_FROM_PUSH = true" or "EVENT_FROM_LIVE = true" when an event comes in, and re-set it after it's done. Always trying to re-align to max-think :)
    Thanks!
