      Hi
I think the simplest explanation is suggested by the actual name of the object itself - it outputs a line between any two points (or numbers/values). The grey box you refer to is (I think) the message box in the lower picture. What it tells line is "go to 0.5 in 5 milliseconds". In this case the line~ object is connected to a multiplier, which scales the samples output by the cycle~ 400 object (which are oscillating between -1 and 1.) So, before the message (or button as you say) is triggered, cycle is oscillating between -1 and 1. When the message is triggered the range of oscillation is reduced to between -0.5 and 0.5, over the time of 5ms.
All I am really doing is quoting from the helpfile for the line object. These are invaluable in understanding the different Max objects.

      Hello Brendan.
What a beautiful example you show me.
Now I have an idea the definition of line object in my mind.
      Thanks a lot .
