Using a saitek x52 joystick with ableton live.
Hello, I'm not a max user but I've heard it can be used to use joysticks and other HID devices to send midi controls to programs like ableton live. I made a post asking for info about this about 6 months ago, and promptly gave up after trying to fool around the [HI] object unsuccessfully. However I still have these awesome joysticks, and thought I'd ask if anyone felt like giving me a hand either by sendingselling me their own patch or sort of shedding some light on what I'd need to do. I did take a stab at the documentation but wasn't able to understand a whole lot of it (I'm plumber by trade and not too hep to things that don't involve water not flowing uphill).
So to summarize, I am a complete max novice that wants to send midi information from my joystickthrottle combo to ableton live to control vst effects and the like. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you're not really interested in learning Max and just want to use your joystick as a MIDI controller, you might want to consider software dedicated to that purpose.
Not sure if you're using Mac or Windows... but here's one for each (others on here might know of better ones... I haven't used either myself).
Windows... http://www.codevis.com/proj_midi.html
Hope that helps,

Neat! I searched high and low for programs to do this but the windows program you linked wasn't out back then. I'm going to test it out. Steim looks awesome but it's mac only and looks to stay that way :(
alas, it's pretty buggy and doesn't support all the buttons. It's still in beta though, so it might get better later.
A general question about max, can you code something in max and then export it as a standalone application?

If that particular app is buggy there are others out there that I'm sure you could try... all I did was google "MIDI joystick".
And yes, you can code something in Max and then export it as a standalone.
I really did do a pretty extensive search of all the joy2midi programs available and none of them are really useful for perfomance. I'm going to hassle some of my music school friends to code me something, thanks sir.
