using external objects

I'm trying the demo of Max/MSP (for the second time) but haven't had time to do much either time. So my very basic question is how I can use an external object I've downloaded, how do I get it into the objects list?

Heya, quite simply, once you've downloaded the external you should have an external (icon like a plug) and a help file (ends with .help) Go to the max folder - there should be a folder 'max help' put the help file in there - then open the link to the cycling 74 folder and put the external in the externals folder- then you just type in the name of the object as normal.

p.s - if you are on a mac- you can get to the max/msp folder just by apple clicking the max icon in the dock.

if you want new externals in this list you must
type their name and category into the list file
manually - (note that the spaces are tabs!)

but you dont need this list/menu, you can just type
into object boxes. yes, of coutse only when you know
the names of the new externals.

I had already tried putting the new external in the externals file, but the external I downloaded just has a blank page icon, no plug. It is the ddg.mono external from Darwin Grosse's synth building tutorial on www.creativesynth.com. The external is downloaded from the cycling74 website, so I didn't think there would be any problems with it. Oddly enough, the help file with it is the ONLY help file I can open, all the ones that were downloaded with the software just open saying the help viewer doesn't know how to handle the selected URL. Any other advice would be appreciated. (Not that the other advice was not)

Cant replicate the problem - What system are you using as in Mac or PC - if mac is it universal binary or Power PC? If you are using an older machine- have you downloaded a binary version by mistake or something - that could explain why you cant open the help files.
other than that it all seems rather strange. Maybe try a re-install and check your version on cyclings website.
