Using Ilock or not

Hello there,

I'm a new comer in Max. I've bought Max6 + Gen.
For the moment, i'm wondering if i should use my ilok, or if i should make the traditionnal internet autorization threw my computers. Actually, i've 3 computers (macbook pro, macbook, and a mac pro). I intend to use Max 6 and Gen on each machine, but not at the same time.

I know that the Ilok solution is a bit a pain in the ass, so, several questions :

- Is it possible to run max 6 + Gen with an ilok, then disconnect the ilok key, and keep working on max 6, and saving (until closing) without generating errors ?

- If i don't want the ilock solution, is it possible to use the internet activation of Cycling Serial on 3 computers ?

- Is it possible to switch from an internet traditionnal autorization threw an Ilok solution (if, in the future, i use max on several machines, up to 4) ?

Best

Hi elecdroide,

question 1 : Yes!

question 2: this it from the authorization-tab of this site:

"If you need multiple authorizations, while Cycling ’74 limits the total number of computers a user can authorize, our single-user license agreement does allow multiple authorizations, as long as the software is only running on one personal computer at a time."
(It used to be three activations/installation that were possible.)

question 3: I guess you need to negotiate with the cycling74 staff...

Hello Jan,
Thanks for your answers.

So in theory, i could make 3 authorizations, and if my needs become a bit more important in terms of computers, i could ask cycling to switch from the internet activation to an ilok solution ?

Will you recommend to me this idea ?

Hi E'

I don't think that switching authorization-method is something that is officially offered. But C74s have been obliging when I ran into that trouble because of changing operating system (that was some years ago).

I personally recommend iLok (I love it and wish more developers would support it ...)

In the case of Max/MSP it has proven to be very useful to me when I had to set up temporary development environments for some installations/projects.

ps:
... before relying of the number of activation, better ask what the current policy is...

Ok Jan, so you think that the best would be using directly Ilok (which i've received today) instead of using traditionnal activation ?

I'm afraid about getting errors on ilock if i use PCs and Macintosh for a work.

And for me, the more important thing is : the condition to use ilok if i do have the possibility to disconnect the key when the soft is launched, in order to have a free usb slot for my various devices.

If you say to me that all is ok (ilok multi-platform, and no problem of generatings errors). I've made the jump, right now but i'm a little bit scared for the moment…

never had any problems with ilok and Max. You can remove it one Max has started up and it will continue to run. I also work on PC and Mac with one iLok.

ok Jan.
I've created an account on ilok.com

Do i need to download the ilok client installer and ilok driver installer on each computer in order the ilock to work ?

Are this 2 softwares compatible with Mac OSX Lion (i plan to run max 6 and gen on it) and what are their utilities ?

Can you guide me threw the different steps ?
- Step 1 : i've a license number from Cycling for Max 6 and Gen (but not the ilock serial number)
- Step 2 : i've a free account on ilok.com
- Step 3 : i've my ilok usb key

Then ? Do i need to contact Cycling to ask for an ilok serial ?

For what it's worth, I just won't use any product that requires iLok (or any hardware dongle) and I hope to hell Cycling74 never moves to requiring it.
And be very careful with the iLok Zero Down subscription that they'll try to sell you. It isn't!
