Using Msp as a Guitar MultiFx Processor?
As a student, i simply cannot afford the prices of FX stomp boxes, especially those geared to more experimental things!
I was wondering how MSP stands up to the quality offered by your traditional hardware pedal?
I've been using max/msp for two years now and have a fair knowledge of how it works and have built a few effects within it.
I've been toying with the idea of running my guitar through a mac/pc laptop and using some sort of external midi controller to offer control over various settings and bypass options.
Is this a viable idea? As a guitarist i haven't actually heard of any artist who uses MSP as there primary FX (I know jonny greenwood/radiohead has been known to use the stutterer)
Thoughts/opinions?
For expirimental guitar sound it will be very interesting, and much more versatile than normal stomp boxes. However, i don't think Max can create the same sound as analog hardware will do.
Stomp boxes can be cool if you connect them with feedback and a long delay. The problem with most stompboxes is that you can't control more than one, and usually only on/off. In Max you can connect one controller with different scalings to many effect parameters.
I can assure you, selfmade audio effects in Max are cool to play with :)
Hey man! this is a great idea. I was searching the net to see if onyone's already created something like that & come across this guy. Jeff Kaiser! he's great!

Only, he plays trumpet :)
that's more or less waht I do daily, and since years.
more or less because i play bass, not guitar.
and dont forget the plugins (which you can control with max)

Hans Tammen does the most interesting & innovative things i
have heard with guitar & max/msp http://www.tammen.org/
Of course Fennesz is good too.

I would point to Krispen Hartung, he recently switched to a Max/MSP
setup with the help of Jeff Kaiser.

Yes, indeed...I am very behind on email and this forum, due to my recent music festival, work, etc.
In any event, I've been back and forth between using Chainer (VST host program) with VSTs, including my own max VSTs, and using MAX only. I am now back to MAX and only one VST running inside of it, namely Reaktor. I have some decent max patches for reverb, delay, compressor, pitch, ringmod, and chorus, plus some delightful guitar mangling patches I've created with the help of Jeff Kaiser and just "leveraging" code from help files. In fact, I have two new patches that emulate my favorite Reaktor ensemble/snap and one of my favorite Boss VF-1 presets.
Anway, the guitarist can indeed convcrt to MAX with some work. I'm just a hack and borrower of code, and I've managed to do it. One caviat, however...I'm playing more experimental mandolin these days over guitar.
email me if you want more info.
Cheers,
Kris
