VERY SIMPLE amplitude leveller illuding me

I know that this is an incredibly easy fix but for some reason it has begun to drive me nuts.

Basically, I am looking for a way to have the signal from an inlet always being outputted at the same volume. For example, quiet sound 1db and loud sound 1db, everything equal. I have found a simple way (with awful results) calculating the difference between desired amplitude and signal and using this figure as the *~ factor but does anyone have a better way to do this.

Help much appreciated-

C74 elves are mind-readers!! Woooooo~ooo~ooooo

Look at /examples/effects/kompressor/ekspando; and at the several compressors that also live there.
