video heart rate monitor

Hi. This is my first post on the forum! I am pretty new to Max, working my way through the Jitter tutorials and piecing out my own projects.
I am trying to replicate this video "heart rate monitor" developed at MIT:
"Figure 2" in the paper gives me a pretty good idea of what needs to be done. I have built a patcher that uses jit.absdiff and to accomplish (i think) what this paper calls "temporal processing". What I DON'T know how to do is the first step, which the paper calls "spatial decomposition". It creates three images of a Laplacian Pyramid (I have attached a screenshot, the full html file is included in the .zip found at the second link above) by putting a Bilateral Blur on the image and subtracting it from the original image.
I haven't found much information about how to add/create a blur filter in Max. Can someone help direct me to information/ideas for that? Links to any similar projects would be helpful as well.
    thanks, spencer
