Vista soundchip GMsynth/external soundcard

Hi
I think I missed "digital audio 101"...

is it possible to route the audio output from my onboard soundchips MIDI synth to my external soundcard? I know this is possible with some HW routing (laptop headphone out to ext soundcard in, out to monitors) but is this possible from within Device Manager, for example?

Many of you will be aware that, within Max, using [noteout] with an onboard soundchip automatically routes audio out of the pc speakers.

The only alternative I can think of is an external GM synth, but I'm hoping for a simple SW solution.

ps no need for "MIDI is not audio" replies

well, windows (any flavour) absolutely sucks at this. on mac you can use dls as an au plugin and route, or jack, which is mature these days on mac. however, jack for windows is apparently quite stable now. you should be able to intercept it with that i think. btw brenden, "did you know..." ...that midi is not audio?!

Really? I thought my midi box contained a whole miniature orchestra??

Haha, anyway thanks for the pointers pid, I'll have a look at Jack. Either that, or invest in a Mac before my studies finish.
