Way to add paths to runtime equivalent to using File Preferences in normal patch

Hi All - So I'm seeing some major difference of behavior between my normal patch and runtime -
It seems the runtime searches it's own path, but my normal patch I have added some paths using the Max File preferences.
Seems the File preference paths (non-runtime) are prescanned or something to make them load faster...
When I load from the the runtime, even when loading explicitly (giving whole path to file) it's taking it a lot longer to open the file.
Most of the files I'm working with are on a windows SMB share... Any suggestions? I saw something about "; max sendapppath somename" to [r somename] but I couldn't quite figure it out... Is runtime considered an app by max?
