What are you listening to lately?
I did not know where to post this. Can I put in a request to have an area in the forum for NON technical posts?
Anyway... I have been listening to:
1. Modeselektor - Happy Birthday!
2. Apparat - Walls
3. Matmos - The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of The Beast
4. Venetian Snares - My Downfall (Original Soundtrack)
5. Drumcorps - Grist
I just have a lot of time during my day to listen to music and would really like some leads on some technical music.
Chad,
What do you mean by technical music? i could recommend some jazz, prog, electronic, music to seek out, but i am not sure what you are looking for.

Since I host a radio program, I play what I've
been listening to for my audience.
I'm assuming "technical" means electronic. Here's some random artists from my iPod that you might like:
Amon Tobin (highly recommended, especially "Supermodified")
Cornelius
Daedelus (he uses a Monome, and probably Max/MSP)
Dominik Eulberg (the 2 disc mix "Fleucht & Kreucht" is solid)
dZihan and Kamien
Electric Birds
Ellen Allien + Apparat collaboration "Orchestra of Bubbles" (highly recommended)
Fennesz
Jan Jelinek
Lusine
M83
Mouse on Mars (lots of diverse back catalog from these guys, "Niun Niggung" is still one of my favs)
Philip Jeck
Proem
Tosca
Ulrich Schnauss
Vitalic
Right now?
Fabio Orsi - Find Electronica
Roland Kayn - Tektra
Takagi Masakatsu - Pia
Horatiu Radulescu ... a bunch of stuff
Subotnick - The Double Life of Amphibians series
Frances White - Center Bridge: Electroacoustic works

Thanks everyone!
Hey Chuck, I did mean "technical" as in computer programming/device control/etc., but whatever... I like all music. I have begun listening to some stuff listed here that I had never heard before.
Exactly what I needed!
The Trevor Wishart track Red Bird blew my mind: http://www.ubu.com/sound/wishart.html
I just pulled up some Supermodified up on Seeqpod.com and liked it enough to buy the CD a minute ago!
Thanks Gregory for the radio link... I checked out the archive but was not sure what time Sunday to look for here: http://archive.wort-fm.org/
Thanks Barry and Adam for the lists of goodies!
Good idea!
And Adam: Massive overlap!
Stuff I'm really into recently in no particular order:
Daedelus - A Gent Agent (also: Daedelus Denies the Days Demise, but all of
it really)
Amon Tobin - Supermodified and Foley Room
Tim Exile - Tim Exile's Nuisance Gabaret Lounge
Vladislav Delay - Multila (an oldy but goody) and the ever awesome demo(n)
tracks
Mu-ziq: Bilous Paths
Eight Frozen Modules: The Abduction of Barry
Terminal11 - Illegal Nervous Habits, + Don Maximo Presents...
Donna Summer: This Needs To Be Your Style
Mathew Herbert: Bodily Functions, Plat Du Jour (these are really perennial
faves)
and the totally "non-technical" and awesome sound track to driving
everywhere for the past 2 weeks:
Frank Black: Teenager of the Year
This is a cool thread!
Keep em commin'

to 2x post to be more on the topic (Chad replied while i was writing the
last one)
Daedelus does indeed use Max with a "tons of buttons" interface, he has a
live record "Live at Low-end Theory" there are some good you tube vids to be
had too..
Tim Exile uses a machine he built with Reaktor and the nuisance record is a
live recording of a show.
One of my favorite performers: jamie lidell has a Max patch he performs live
with. Check out "Live in Stuttgart" to hear what its like, though the raw
techno sound of that record is different from his latest tours where he
performs his R+B Songs with the same setup.
There are the Guitar Zeros too, who use max to facilitate a guitar hero
controller band...
Finally also worth noting even though not a max thing is Kid Beyond,
beat-boxer and ableton live master. The don;t touch the computer paradigm of
his show is pretty cool.
So thats more on topic, and I'm also interested in *other* cool performance
geeks y'all know of...
Cheers,

Kid Beyond *is* a Max thing; he uses my Major Malfunction plugin,
which is Pluggo-based. :-)

I've got several "seconded" ones from Adam's list, including Fennesz,
Ellen Allien/Apparat, Tosca, and Ulrich Schnauss.
Here's some others in play a lot in my iTunes/iPod - I can't imagine
some of these are not Max/MSP inclined:
Air
The Album Leaf
Aril Brikha
Cobblestone Jazz
Fennesz & Sakamoto - "Cendre"
Helios
Matthew Dear
Tristeza
Telefon Tel Aviv

Some old and new(ish) for me.
Amon Tobin (love that Foley Room)
KMFDM
Autechre
The Kills
FSOL (isdn in particular)
Mississippi Fred McDowell (highly doubtful he used Max)
And some Butthole Surfers (I wish Gibby was a Max user)
I wish I could pick apart some Autechre patches.... :)
sunra ( i always wonder what he would have been doing with max if he was still alive )
madlib ( cant wait to see the loopdigger digging into max )
kaffe Matthews ( well she plays with Lisa )
Ensemble Nipponia ( has nothing to do with max )
and some cumbia cause my neighbour is from Chile....
Today I found myself listening to the following at various parts of
the day:
Tool - 10,000 Days
Cat Stevens - Greatest Hits
Brian Eno + David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
Terry Riley - The Cusp of Magic (performed by Kronos Quartet and Wu Man)
Nine Horses (David Sylvian, et al) - Snow Borne Sorrow
Los Van Van - Llego...Van Van

Chad,
Ok, max/msp related;
Boredoms (those spheres in Eye's hand are max controlled!)
Ikue Mori (for a max/msp/jitter combo check out her dvd on Tzadik, badass!!! Or any of her cds under her name or her group Mephista.)
Pita (responsible for making me buy a laptop and stop doing analog electronics...shit was heavy and limited)
Marcus Schmickler (same deal as Pita, saw them on the same tour together in the u.s.)
Tetsuo Inoue & Carl Stone duo ( on Cycling 74's own label is pretty good)
Luke Dubois (saw him do a kick ass set in recent past, processing a live vocalist at thestonenyc.com)
Hans Tammen & Dafna Naftali (if you don't know about Harvestworks.org check it out)
O.blaat (queen of Share.dj)
Brenda Hutchison (yes, the same one who did the soundtrack to "Liquid Sky")
Laurie Anderson (now uses max/msp and various other things)
ok, there is 10,which feels like i just did a mini version homage to Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon, the list goes on and on....hope that helps. Yet, i have an affinity for odd numbers, so i will also take the opportunity to plug my electro-acoustic group, Brown Wing Overdrive www.brownwingoverdrive.com , in-which i use max/msp (although this may turn you off max/msp...ha ha ha!).

Wow. I knew he was into the technical side of audio. I wonder if I've heard any of his patches. He was one of the first to start pulling me to the weird side of my musical tastes.
You mean like aspirin and barney rubble vitamins? :)
You know what would be cool is if there were some sort of Max/MSP playlist on itunes that everyone could access. Official from cycling would be awesome (great exposure and marketing too..hint hint), or even a user contributed list. I was amazed at how much more independent stuff itunes has lately.

Well, if we are going to start giving shout-outs to people on the list, then
I'll add that I am now preferring Autechre's (quasi?) labelmate John
Callaghan.
Don,
the Butthole's "Locust Abortion Technician" still blows my mind. Gibby is doing electronic stuff around NY, but it is just theremin and vocal stuff so far. If i end up at one of his gigs, i will suggest max/msp while i hand him fred flintstone vitamins laced with emergen-c.

I'm pretty sure you'd be surprised at how simple
they are. In my experience, Sean and Rob simply do
not reduce easily to their tools or patches, and
I find that whole line of reasoning about as useful
as prowling the stage taking notes about what kind
of gear is in the rack [your mileage may vary]. In
fact, most creative people don't reduce to their
tools.
In fact, I'm pretty sure that you'd guess wrong
if you tried at run at where they *do* use Max.
I've sure gotten it wrong.
My advice to the autechre wannabe? Find youself
a very simple synth patch [best of all, make your
own] with lots of opportunities for parametric
control - the simpleFM patch in the MSP tutorials
should work fine.
Instead of thinking about beats and bars, try
thinking of larger scale control curves or ways
to generate and organize variety. Take your curve
generators and teach them to output values when
driven with different time scales, and start patching
that information into your synth.
And *listen* to the work. Really hard.
I think things will make more sense after that.
Oh, sure - it's not as "efficient" as ripping
off someone else's work and engaging in a bout of
cargo-cult patching, but efficiency is overrated,
and is only going to give you something imitative.
I speak for myself only, of course. Here's some
stuff to get you thinking.

A large number of North American tour performances from Autechre have just gone up on the Autechre shop on Beep, quite reasonably priced.
