Which projector do you recommend for live audiovisual performance?

Hi, I am about to purchase a projector for live audiovisual performance. I would appreciate much if you have some recommendations or tips.
I am not sure how much Full HD models and WXGA models are different in practice. WXGA models seem cheaper and lighter.

Many thanks for your help in advance,
Masa

Thanks a lot for your recommendation Jenn. That looks nice.
As I have to consider the weight of a projector (to bring out to a venue without a car), Acer H6510BD seems to be the best and reasonable option after my evening search.

i would also recomment to check th black level of the projector.

Without knowing more about your situation it's hard to comment. The combination of desired image size, throw distance, ambient lighting, screen gain, etc. all have a great impact on your choices.

You should spend some time on projectorcentral.com evaluating each potential purchase - their throw distance calculator is quite useful, and is customized for each projector/lens setup. You can use this to model the types of conditions you might encounter in a venue, and the throw distances you need to produce an image of a given size.

If you're planning on doing any blending (i.e. multiple projections) I recommend you go with DLP projectors, which tend to have higher contrast ratios. You will not get deep blacks with most LCD projectors at the low end. I tend to stay away from LCDs altogether, even for single channel projections, but for some the increased color gamut will be attractive. Cheaper DLP's can also produce color wheel artifacts, which some viewers will be sensitive to.

I own a BenQ SH910 and two BenQ MW817ST short throw projectors. The SH910 is bright and looks great, but requires quite a long throw to produce a reasonably sized image. The MW817ST is a simple, light unit, but has no zoom or lens shift so you have to have to be able to position it just right. That can be challenging, depending on the venue.

Thanks for your advice HHELT, as far as I checked online reviews, Acer H6510BD should be OK in terms of the black level.

HI Jesse, thank you very much for your advice and all the information.
It's good to know that DLP projectors are more suitable for blending and tend to have higher contrast ratios.

I am concerned about color wheel artefacts of Acer H6510BD, but unfortunately I am not knowledgeable enough to justify going more expensive projectors just with that concern (this purchase would be funded by my university by making a request with justification).

Hmm, after checking projectorcentral.com (thanks! I didn't know the website), now I am interested in BenQ W1070 as well.

Yes, if you're concerned about the color wheel artifacts I'd definitely consider the W1070. If your audience is sensitive to this issue it can really detract from the viewing experience. With a six-segment color wheel you will be in much better shape.

The vertical lens shift is also a highly desirable feature for this price range. But a 1000 lumens difference is tough... this would make it more critical to have good control of the lighting in your performance venue.

Thank. I think I would go with Acer H6510BD, as I cannot control the lighting of the venue of the upcoming event.
For the color wheel artifacts, I heard that a ND filter can be used to decrease the problem when I do not need the maximum brightness.
