Wii setup with Bluetooth
I'm trying the Wii controller with the aka. Patch but can't seem to get past
the first step. In using the bluetook setup app, my computer is not seeing
the Wii. I'm using the any device option in the setup dialog. Wii is on
and flashing.

Worked fine for me (for 2 Wii-motes)
Are you sure it's set up?
Sometimes its funky connecting - I find that you have to send the
"connect" msg first, to make sure its working

0) Setup (Pairing) Wii Remote for use with your computer using "Bluetooth
Setup Assistant.";
Bluetooth doesn't see it.
1) Push "Sync" button of WiiRemote. LEDs will start blinking.;
Don't see a button that is labeled sync although pushing any button makes it
blink.
2) Send "connect" message to "aka.wiiremote". LEDs will stop blinking when
it's connected.;
Nothing
3) Start "metro" to get date from WiiRemote. Bang causes the output of data
from WiiRemote.;
Nothing
Am I missing part? I have the white hand held device with buttons that
match the names in the patch. Should there be something that plugs into the
computer?

Hey Gary,
In order for the object to see the wiimote, it has to be paired with
the computer.
After hitting the sync button on the wiimote itself, run thru the
pairing process via the bluetooth preferences. set it as "other
device", and there is no passkey for it. If you have a nintendo wii
around, make sure it's off...otherwise it becomes a contest to see
who gets to pair with the device first. It can only pair with one
device at a time.
I've synced many of these without an issue...let me know if you need
more help.
Best,
David

I tried the bluetooth setup. Wii wasn't detected after 10+ minutes of
looking. Again, I don't see a sync button on my Wii controller. Does it
have another name? I have 1, 2, A, B, +, - , home, power and a four point
"compass." No Nintendo box in the area.

gary,
the sync button is that red little thingy which you see on the right side, when
you open up the battery-compartment.
hope this helps

A convenient tip:
Pressing "1" and "2" buttons at the same time has the same effect as the sync button.
BTW, what is your Mac?
One of my students had PowerBook G4 and it was difficult to make it work with Wiimote.
there is an app it the aka site (the programmer of the patch for the
wii pad) called rvl enable (or something like that).. if you use that,
I'm more than shure that you'll connect the gamepad properly to your
mac.. next step is obviously to get signal into the aka patch..
sometimes I experience some trouble doing this.. i would thank if
anyone could help me with that (I know that I have to connect the
metro switch and then send a connect message, but sometimes - or
better, most of the times -, it doesn't work)..

I'm on a MacBook Pro Intel.
Pressing "1" and "2" buttons at the same time got me a bit further.
Bluetooth responded but wanted passkey pairing. The Max patch responded too
and now reads the state of all of the buttons. It doesn't sense the motion
however.

You have to tell the Bluetooth Device Setup that you do not want to use a passkey with this device (Passkey Options). Even then, you may have trouble. PPC is really a pain, Intel Mac is better. If it doesn't connect and work correctly in the aka patch, then go back to the Mac Bluetooth setup, delete the device, and start again.
Another piece of software that works pretty dependably with the Wiimote on Mac is OSCulator by Camille Troillard: http://www.osculator.net/wiki/. It can send out MIDI CC values or keystrokes. It's really easy to use that to get all the data from the Wiimote and pass it to Max via MIDI control values. OSCulator is also valuable as a partner to Max for getting Max to send keystrokes to other programs. Send values from Max to OSCulator via OSC (or udpsend) and have OSCulator send keystrokes. OSCulator has a window that lets you choose which application gets the keystrokes (including "frontmost").
Good luck,
Tim
Another thing: with the aka.wiiremote object, there are reports that chording the 1 and 2 buttons may not work as dependably as using the sync button.

I had the same problem for the first time.
Strangely, I tried again in another room where there was no other computers, and it suddenly worked.
I don't know why, but since then, it just works.
When setting up the wiimote, you click on "set up bluetooth
device" then check "any device" as the the search start,
click "passkey options" then check "do not use passkey with
this device". i was stumped first time round as well.

Ok, Got it. So here's the summary of your collected wisdom so far.
In the BlueTooth setup, no passkey
Red button (on mine) is inside the battery cover.
Set up instructions in aka.wiiremote are perfect.
Motion sensor and buttons work
What doesn't work yet
Ir output is a constant 0.0 0.0 0.0 0 (switch on)
Expansion (switch on)
Vibration (switch on)
Leds seem to be understood in the patch but do not show up on the device.
Caveat: I borrowed my controller from my stepson. I am getting the idea
that there are different versions of the controller. Perhaps mine doesn't
do ir.

it's that way for everybody's wiimote (as I posted ;)
> Ir output is a constant 0.0 0.0 0.0 0 (switch on)
do you have an IR source? the IR on the wiimote is a camera that is
looking for 2 IR sources (LEDs, some here have tried candles, etc),
and uses the 2 sources to give an idea of where you are pointing.

Those should also work. I must admit that I am still using beta
version 4 of the aka.wiimote object since it worked great for me and
wasn't anxious to change mid-project.

As far as I know they are all the same.
For IR, there have been some post here on what to do. For an ida what
is contained within the wiimote, check out:

I'm on a PPC (OSX 10.4.9, Max 4.6.3, Belkin Class 1 dongle version 2.0 + EDR, no idea about bluetooth framework - I don't even know where to look) and can't even seem to get past the bluetooth setup stage.
All of the following have been attempted using both the synch and 1/2 combination and the buttons were held down constantly throughout the entire process.
The Device search finds - Nintendo RVL-CNT-01
I have set the passkey to none
I press continue when advised that information must be gathered from the device.
I am instantly told that my computer is set up to use the device.
It doesn't appear in the bluetooth device list.
No reaction from the patch.
Does anybody have any idea as I have absolutely no clue.
Cheers Andy
I've found my bluetooth framework version - 1.7.14. According to aka.wiiremote FAQ 1.6.3 and above is required. So I don't understand why it isn't adding as a device.
Interestingly, I installed Darwiinremote and the associated Wii Remote framework (which worked immediately) and tried Max again - and everything started to work. Unsure if this is because of the framework download or not as it is only saved to my desktop. Worth a try if anyone suffers the same problem.
Andy
how do you install the framework?
thanks, Michael
