wiimote in 2016?
I found a couple old wiimotes in a drawer and fondly remembered using them to (easily) control patches without a great deal of faff.
I also remember a bunch of the externals (aka.wiimote, ajh.wiimote) stopped work on an update of OSX a while back too.
I remember someone (Timo?) had updated ajh.wiimote, but searching the forum turned up nothing useful about it.
Is there a way to use a wiimote in Max7 on OSX 10.10+? (without using OSCulator)
I have nothing against OSCulator, and actually own a license, I just dislike external app dependencies.
Hi Rodrigo,
I still use the Wii remote quite extensively - i like the physicality of it when playing live. I did not follow up the development of the Max externals - I use my own custom external app to capture the data and to translate them into MIDI.
But I might be able to contribute some general informations/experiences.
Wii Remote connects fine and stable to OS X until now (OS X 10.11). But from 10.8. to 10.9. Apple changed the underlying Bluetooth stack - I had to rewrite part of my external app. That might be the reason why older externals have problems....
Here only the old Wii Remotes (without built in MotionPlus) connect reliably. The newer ones lose contact or don't connect at all.
If OSCulator is still under active maintenance it should work. Otherwise there still is STEIM's junXion: http://steim.org/product/junxion/
Yes, wiimote is still a great controller. I have good experience of using OSCulator, and DarwiinRemoteOSC (it's free: http://www.matthiaskronlachner.com/?p=1574). Never tested junXion. A good, stable external would be great, too ;-).
So it looks like that one has to use an external app nowadays then?
It's to say @Jan, that if I buy new wiimotes I'm over? :o
Hey Rodrigo,
Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm trying to connect a Wii remote to MAX 7 at the moment but can't seem to get anywhere.
Thanks,
Oli
Nope, nothing unfortunately.
I might like to take a look at this in my spare time, it would be a good addition to the Max Worldmaking package for use in VR.
I do have the source for ajh.wiimote from 4 years ago, so I'll try and take a look at how much work needs to be done to get a 64-bit version working on the latest versions of macOS.
New Osculator 3.x (http://www.osculator.net) works fine on Sierra and handling multiple wiimotes (and, of course, allows OSC messaging to Max).
OSCulator is probably the way to go to ensure ongoing compatibility, Apple seems to modify the BT stack every few OSes so it's hard for an independent coder to keep up.
I'd vote that the Worldmaking package is best off including an extra patcher folder for 3rd party solutions just so new VR developers understand they are making a surer bet on long-term compatibility working with tools like OSCulator or dp.kinect2
