that´s a max 4 collective. if it for some reaosn wont open in max8, you could try opening it in the free max 4 runtime and if you have luck, nothing is hidden so that you can read it

Wow, do I need to install Max4 on my computer ?

the format was barely used and i have never tried to open it with later max versions. older patches will open, older runtimes will still run, but it might be that mxf is deprecated.

on windows you can install max 4, on mac - when you can not run 32bit apps - you can use a resource editor (yes, that still works on AFS) and copy the *maxb* resource into a new file´s data fork, save it as max2/maxb file type and add .mxb as extension.

or of course, if you know the source, ask the author for a patch :)
