Any interest in an open-source toolkit for gestural musical interaction?

Hi

I would like to announce Harmonic Motion, a planned open-source toolkit for musicians and artists interested in working with gestural data (from e.g. the Kinect).

At the moment we're assessing requirements and plan to have a beta ready later this year. If you're interested in finding out more, we've got an infrequent mailing list where we'll send announcements here: http://harmonicmotion.timmb.com.

Also, if you are interested in working with gestural inputs and have a couple of minutes to fill out a quick survey on the website, that would be amazing. The clearer an idea we have of potential users, the better we can target the project to ensure it's useful and user-friendly.

It's being created at the Centre for Digital Music, Queen Mary University of London.

Cheers!

Thanks; survey done.

(your publications list was invaluable, so it was the least I could do)

if it plugs into max: bring it on!

Btw, I'm also on mac, there was no questions concerning platforms in the survey, or I didn't notice.

+1

This would be great...

What kind of things will be in the toolkit? Like gesture recognition? Mapping? Remapping? One-to-many/many-to-one?

Will it be based on and/or similar to things like libmapper, mnm, etc...?

+1 on interest, big time. Particularly if it's embeddable inside max.

Once the Leap motion comes out, we're going to be drowning in gesture patches!

all of those i hope!

I only asked because there are multiple tools for this kind of thing already, some of which are open source (http://libmapper.github.io).

Implementation for max seems a bit weird (you have to compile your own external, etc...), but is open source and seems powerful as shit.

Platforms - yes that would have been a sensible question to ask. The plan is for Mac + Windows.

Many of the questions I don't have answers for at the moment. There are primary goals around the project and key to these are usability for musicians and artists without too much coding experience. However, I will be trying to make use of existing open-source software as much as possible along the way, and obviously to avoid duplicating tools that already exist!

Thanks for all the comments and responses to the questionnaire - very nice to see lots of enthusiasm from the Max community :)
