Audio cracking and muting issues (8.6.2)

Hello everyone,

Just updated to 8.6.2 (from 8.5.7) and ran into an audio porblem :

The sound quickly starts to crack a lot until it gets silent. A few seconds later it suddenly reappears just to disappear again the same way etc... I have the feeling that it might be an external problem to Max (like a clock issue or something) because even when the sound is lost, the meters keep on modulating fine. Still, it was working normally under 8.5.7 and just appears when I updated to 8.6.2.

Here's what I've done to track the issue:

  • Checked with 2 different virtual soundcards: Loopback & Blackhole.

  • Trashed Max preferences.

  • Updated macos (from 12.7.3 to 12.7.4 - Monterey's latest).

  • Run maintenance scripts (from Onyx).

  • Checked and repaired my system HD using Disk Utility.

Nothing of the above has fixed the issue.

My installed packages :

  • ease

  • ejies

  • HISStools

  • ICST Ambisonics

  • Jasch Objects

  • link

  • miraweb

  • odot

  • spat5

My patch under dev. uses HISStools / ICST AMbisonics / Jacsh Objects / odot and a lots of code in Java (no audio in Java).

CPU is around 15%

Hardware is Macbook pro 13" apple Silicon M1 connected to an old DENON Home-Cinema Surround Decoder (7.1) through HMDI. Was working fine until this update!

If anyone could help me to troubleshoot this issue that would be great, otherwise I will sadly have to roll back to 8.5.7 ... again T_T

Thanks for your help

UPDATE: Rolled back to 8.5.7 and that sloved the issue!! There is definitely something wrong with 8.6.x That was my second try at updating Max to 8.6 and I end up rolling back again. I'll keep on trying but for the moment I'll stick with 8.5.7 ^^'

I have the same problem when using an external audio interface with Max 8.6.2 although I don't have that problem when using the computer's built-in microphone (which still sounds better on a Mac than PC). Could be a firmware issue with the interface. It's unfortunate because I really like the new SFIZZ~ object for sampling. Currently I'm working with both Max 8.5.7 and 8.6.2 for different purposes. Hopefully the issue will get fixed with the next update.

Same problem here (Max 8.6.4.) - I am routing Audiosamples with groove object from Max through Blackhole to Ableton - Audio starts to crackle then silents and after a few seconds audio starts again... (I also use two audio interfaces (Scarlett 8i6 MK3 and 18i6 MK2). Never had problems with this setup on Mac Airbook M1 2020 / Ventura 13.6.7)

Hope some developer reads this and will fix this bug?! Would be great! :)
