For my university project I'm looking to add an auto make up gain feature to a compressor. 

It's a fixed threshold compressor similar to an 1176, and a single slider controls the input gain. From this I want the output gain to be compensated for so that there is not a change in volume

If someone could help that'd be great thanks

compare input level to compressor with output and lift it .

I am not going into theories about compression and how we hear or measure outcome,

but there will allways be difference in percepted "volume" or better say loudness.

@Source Audio Sorry I didn't explain myself right. I understand compression, I more was asking how I could link the input and output on a compressor I have made in Max so that the compressor then has an auto gain feature

Don't compare the peak levels. Instead maybe [average~ 3330 absolute] to get a loudness measure of the original signal.
