Anyone interested in collaborating on a project of mine? I need someone who knows max/msp that can answer some questions, help me reduce the learning curve, help translate some of my design and engineering patterns to the paradigm of the language so that I can build my project, or potentially, if you like the sound of it, collaborate on making it and share authorship. The idea marries some computational geometry with sequencing and aims at generative music based on geometric parameters. I use Ableton Suite to experiment with generative music. I saw the function to control Ableton via MaxForLive several times, but did not immediately see how I could use this practically. I also found it a bit overwhelming how to program this. 

After watching some tutorials I'm starting to understand what is possible. But I'm fairly new to programming with Max. So I would have liked to get some help and a push in using L.O.M.

I would like to make a patch where after a certain time has elapsed the "generate" knob in the generate tab of the clip view is triggered to create a new melody/rhythm. Who can help me with this?

Hello everyone! This is my first post here. I am using Version 8.6.5 and trying to create sound from fractal videos. There are some aspects I would like to improve, but I am not knowledgeable enough about MAX/MSP to know how to do so or what direction to take.

I would like to add the ability to incorporate scales into the generated MIDI notes. Since I have four discrete paths, I would like to use the BEAP Quantizer module or something similar, but be able to change keys/scales on four separate occurrences of the Quantizer at the same time. Is there a way to do this?

I would also like to add a better rhythm component for the overall patch.

Any ideas for improvement or direction are welcome. The current state of the patch is attached.

I am also using data from the videos to create controls for FM synthesis. This and the MIDI are combined later in a separate video editor. You can see results by doing a YouTube search for "Frax Audio."

I'm a student just beginning to learn Max, and I'm encountering some issues when trying to use counter and comparison (>, ==, etc.) objects together. What I'm trying to do is use a select object that outputs a bang whenever I press a key on my keyboard-- the bang goes into a counter that counts back and forth between 0 and 1. I am sending the number from this counter object into two comparison objects, one of which is ==0 and one of which is ==1. My goal is to get alternating bang messages from the switching between 0 and 1 in the counter object, but with the way I have this set up, both of these comparison objects will send out bangs at  the same time. I've attached a patch with the problem area only. Can anyone tell me what's going on here or if there's a better way to do this? As I said, I would like to get alternating bangs from the comparison objects, or counting between 0 and 1. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. Thanks!

Essentially for this you'd just want to have a mapping parameter. So, your bang would say trigger a line object or function or counter, anything that goes from point a to b over your specified time. Once you have that you can use the below code (taken from one of ableton's max for live devices) and map to whatever param you want. You will just have to adjust the scale input value to fit whatever values your device is outputting.

You can essentially have as many of these in a device as you want so that one movement or trigger in max automates a number of different parameters within ableton.

Hello, I’m new to Max and need help creating a simple M4L device. My goal is to use Macro Controls or Device Parameters with the same MIDI controller element, but only on armed tracks. Is this possible? I’ve spent a lot of time trying to follow advice and instructions from ChatGPT, every time believing him since he told me every time that was possible and every time gave me instructions that weren't working. I’m hoping there’s an easy solution or existing device that can achieve this without requiring deep knowledge of Max.

Im using Splat~ with @overdubmode accum. If i record at standard speed it all works well, but if i record at lower speed so the interpolation kicks in, then the overdubbed sound gets louder. The slower it records, the louder and glitchier it gets. 

Also, Im using the trick from the iPoke documentation of connecting a signal from the patcher playing back the sound to the poker, to force it to play before recording. Seems a bit dodgy though so would love to know if there's a better solution.

I think this may be expected behaviour?  If you slow the write speed down, then you are effectively pouring more samples into an equivalent space of the buffer.  Imagine you are icing a cake: the slower you move the icing tip, the thicker the icing will be, because more of it accumulates on top of each other. 

If it helps: The splat~ op in gen basically just spreads the input sample value between the two nearest sample slots in a buffer, with a linear mix between them, and the overdubmode=accum means that it adds to the existing data in the buffer.  

If you wanted to counteract this and balance the amount regardless of the speed, you'd need to attenuate the signal before it goes into splat~, with some factor that inversely proportional on the write speed.  

Thats what i thought was going on behind the scenes too, but it doesn't seem like the most intuitive behaviour or something I'd do on purpose, more like an oversight. 

I implemented this in the example, and it does indeed seem to work as expected when overdubbing. If this is the intended functionality, why is it only happening when overdubbing, and not when replacing? If overdub is zero, it's recording at normal volume, so to get the "expected" behaviour i need to interpolate between 1 and the speed-compensated gain. (second example).

Another confusing behaviour is that if record with overdub 0.  (replacing) at low speed, then jump to a higher speed, the old audio stays. Again the behind the scenes explanation makes sense, it's just skipping samples, but since it's supposed to be "interpolated overdubbing", this is not what i would expect. 

Splat~ Overdub gets louder when interpolating.

I have an idea to ensure the interaction of modules through complex messages that looks something as (prefix1 value1, prefix2 value2, prefix3 value3), where prefix is a label you attach to values (as if you were using prepend object for the value) to operate on them through route for example, and value is some data type which could be of any data type including list. I understand how to parse the messages, but i have issues with constructing them, i tried using zl.group, zl.lace etc. which, according to my assumptions, should have brought enough clarity to the solution of my problem, but in reality it led to an unpredictable final result. So what should i do to derive a homogeneous way of constructing such messages? I haven't managed to find any decent material on that topic, so can you suggest me some?

I am wondering if the following would be possible:

I would like to design a patch (or standalone app) that allows the user to read in a video file and then set start and end frames to loop -- and repeat this for several (say, up to 12 or 16 or so) looping clips, each of which would have its own place in a grid on screen.

The background: I designed a (minimally) interactive video essay a few years back that encouraged close viewing of a scene by means of a grid of looping clips (individual shots in a scene). The video essay is here:
