Hi all, I'm very new to max and am having a bit of trouble getting my head around how to easily use arrays / dicts, and am wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.

Lets say I've got a dictionary with the following structure:

And I want to access the value stored at a given key (in this case the key is variable). So I do that by sending a message with the key I want to look up into [sprintf get %d], and then wire that into my dict input. 

 Connecting a print to the second output of my dict, I get something like:

Now what I'm wanting to get is the reference to the actual array out of the dict's second output, so that I can then do array.tolist and look at the individual values within the list. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out a way of getting from this output to the actual array.

For instance, taking the dict's second output and doing [zl.nth 2] gives me the (string?) value "array", and doing [zl.nth 3] gives me the (also string?) value "u016000977".  I have tried to array.tolist both of these values and end up with nothing in the case of "array" and "u016000977" in the case of "u016000977", and I'm also quite confused as to why they behave differently since they appear to my uninitiated mind as just "strings". 

I've noticed that adding @legacy 1 to the dicts outputs my values as a list, which is where I want to be eventually anyway, but I would like to figure out how I'm intended to do that with the current API.

I recently started learning M4L and I'm really excited to share one of my first original patches.  It's just a fun little take on a killswitch, where a highpass filter's cutoff quickly goes all the way up when you toggle it off, and it quickly goes all the way down when you toggle it on.  (It doesn't actually pass audio; it's just controlling a separate plugin)  The problem is that I was really hoping that I'd be able to assign a MIDI key to the toggle switch, so I could use it in a more musical way -- like noteon would toggle it on and noteoff would toggle it off.   But the toggle doesn't seem to be assignable at all.  I've got my fingers crossed that one of the M4L experts here can tell me how I can make this work.

But what I'd really like to know is where I can find tutorials or example patches that are specifically about MIDI controlled audio effects.  Whenever I search the maxforlive website for this, all I find are MIDI effects, instead of MIDI controlled 

 effects.  So any suggestions on resources would be greatly appreciated!

I know I can use open>pcontrol>thispather to open a subpatch, how can I use a bang message only? This is just to clear up space and avoid double-clicking. Basically, bang>subpatch

I still think of myself as a Max newb but I feel I have gone pretty far down the rabbit hole to create the attached patch (deleted some stuff for the version posted here). The goal of the patch is this: 1) load in up to 10 VST audio plugins 2) Have them all connecting to a matrix object acting as a matrix mixer. So I can route them all kinds of ways. 3) Then I can save the entire thing as a preset, which includes  every param in each of the 10 VSTs and the entire matrixctrl configuration as well. 4) And, very importantly, I can ramp from , preset X to preset Y over some Z amount of time (ms) that I set with a numbox. It's really fun to paly with the ramp periods.

 I am now in the end stages of patching this together becasue it works reliably and smoothly 90% of the time. However, with most patches I make, I get to a point where there is a fiddly little issue that I just don't know how to solve. The main issue I am running into is that 

 when I ramp from preset X to Y over a ramp period of Z ms, it 'zippers' or clicks and pops the entire duration of the ramp. 

Some notes about the patch: 1) I used a MIDI Fighter Twister to control this thing so there's a big-sh patcher within the patch dedicated to that. No issues there (that I"m aware of). 2) for the most part I'm using commercially popular plugins like SoundToys and Valhalla.

The main patch is VST.matrix and VSTRAMP is the abstraction that makes it possible to ramp between two VST settings. 

I would be grateful to anyone who could help. Also, if there is anyone willing to help me really fine tune this thing, I am willing to pay.

I have a patch here that uses a noise gate to trigger samples from a folder using polybuffer~. I want to turn off looping with the groove~ object, but when I set @loop 0, only one sample from the folder plays and none of the subsequent samples are triggered. Changing groove~ to play~ produces the same outcome. I'm still fairly new to Max - what am I missing?

I've just upgraded to Max 9 and all new objects I make are the same size and Max would only make them vertically longer as you type. I'd much prefer the Max 8 way of handling this, where only the horizontal size was changed as you typed in the object. Is there a way of changing this?

I am working on a Jitter MOP c-external with two inputs and two outputs:
