Buffer~ won't load files

I made a patch on my iMac and it includes a couple buffer~ objects. It works fine there, but when I move it to my older MacBook Air, the buffer~ objects won't load samples. I use "replace" messages and select the proper files from within the dialogue that appears, but after clicking "open" no file is imported into the buffer. Is this because my MacBook Air is not a good enough machine? (Early 2015 13-inch MacBook Air, 8GB Ram, 1.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5)

Your macbook is perfectly ok to load few files into buffer.
You have some kind of problem which can't be detected
with so few infos.
I would make new pach on 2015 macbook and insert
new buffer~ object and then try again.
if that also fails, upload that patch and any errors from max console.

You can also open buffer~ help file to check if buffer object is
functional at all, send it fill sin or similar message.

Thanks for your reply!
I had forgotten to check the Max console.

I just made a new patch on the MacBook Air with only a buffer~ in it. Max still can't load those sound files. The Max Console lists an error that says:

buffer~ * cannot open parser for this file

The files I'm trying to open are .wav files that I sent over to the MacBook from my iMac. Max on my iMac can open the original files. The audio files in the MacBook are exact copies of those files. It does seem, though, that Max on my MacBook is being picky about those same audio files.

On the MacBook I just went back to my original patch and checked the Max console. The Max console there also says "cannot open the parser for this file".

if wave file is small enough upload it here, makes me wonder
what's wrong.
but upload it from macbook.

or try to open it in any other audio editor, or quicktime to see
if something is wrong with it.

I can open the files in other programs. I can open them in Quicktime, Music, Audacity and Sound Studio. In fact, I tried re-saving them with Sound Studio, but the newly saved versions still won't load into Max and Max is still giving me the same error. I also tried making a new patch with a buffer~ and then using the "replace" message to load the newly saved files. Nothing works.

It really seems to be that it's only Max on this MacBook Air that doesn't want to cooperate. Is it an issue that arises form the combination of this computer and the particular OS version it's using? I'm running OS 10.15.7.

I sort of hesitate to upload the audio files here on a public forum because they are part of the unique character of this piece of music (not anything outlandish or new, but I think effective and useful). If what I've written here doesn't give enough information, though, I might still upload the files for you.

you can try to trash max preferences files.

Thanks for all your help!
After throwing away preferences and still not getting results I discovered where the problem was, I moved the audio samples on to the desktop and tried loading them from there. It worked! Then I noticed the main folder which these files are buried in was called "Max/Music" and I suddenly recalled having other problems with Max when a folder name contained non-standard characters. I changed the folder name to "Max_Music" and now Max can access the audio files. The strange part is that the main patch and its subppatches are also buried in folders within that main folder, but Max can find the subpatches. Anyway, the problem has been solved. Thanks, again, for your help!
