Can't see patchers in File Browser

I've created some patches that I want to use as objects in another, bigger patch. They save to my file path and show up in 'File/Open Recent Patcher' with no problem. But, in File/Show File Browser they are nowhere to be found. If i try to add them, I get the message 'No new files have been added to your search path'. Thus, if I open a new object and try to use the (sub)patchers by name, no luck, At first I thought it was because i was just using a trial version of Max 8, but it's the same now I just bought a license. No doubt I am doing something very stupid - but what? Any clues?
