I'm working on a Max for Live device for setting custom colours on my Launchpad.

I'm using JavaScript, there's basically one JS object in my device that does everything.

In this object, I have lots of observers. I'm basically observing every slot in session mode to detect if it has a clip or not, and if that status changes, and I'm observing every clip for changes of its colour index.

It works, but it is quite slow. When the device is loaded, I can watch the Launchpad's pads changing their colour one after the other.

Is there something I'm missing? Are there best practices to speed up setting up LiveAPI observers?

As per the title, I have always observed that live.remote~ sets its target parameter to the target parameter's minimum value after setting the live.remote~'s object ID. It also does that after reloading a Live set with live.remote~'s "Use Persistent Mapping" parameter set to true. My question now is: can I rely on that? That would actually be helpful in my patch. I do not see it documented anywhere that live.remote~ is supposed to behave that way, so I figured I would ask here. Many thanks!

About 10 years ago I wrote a series of tutorials that walked people through using the Live API with JavaScript. A lot of people gave me very positive feedback on this (it might be the most popular thing I ever published online), but a lot of the content had become obsolete by the time Live 11 launched because of deprecations in the Live API to facilitate MPE support. I've been meaning to update it for years, but my priorities were in a different place for a long time. Because the old content was obsolete, I didn't even maintain the old website and 

you can only find the old tutorials on the web archive

That's a real a shame, so I'm very happy to announce the tutorials have been resurrected and updated for Live 12! (Technically Live 11 or higher)

Just in time to be obsoleted by Max 9 and v8 too... lmao, nooooo 😭 

It's ok, I'm on top of v8. There's info about my plans at the link above. v8 is great and I'm looking forward to it as the future of JavaScript in Max and Max for Live.

I'm open to any constructive feedback. Find a typo? Something looks wonky in your browser? Think a section is not clear enough, or too ELI5 and verbose? Did you try to generate a clip 37-times-the-age-of-the-universe in duration in the final tutorial and it crashed your computer? Let me know here. I hope this will be a good resource for everyone for years to come (especially once I add v8 content) and I'm happy to keep refining it.

I searched deeply on the forum but no post helped me solve this little riddle.

I am trying to open a device on a separate floating window which should stay on top even if I click somewhere else.

I can manage to keep a floating window but it goes behind Live's interface whenever I click on it.

I tried giving the argument "Topmost 1" to the thispatcher object but this does not work.

This is what I am sending to "thispatcher" now: 

window flags nomenu, window flags float, window size 0. 0. 629.382764 169.519548, window exec, front, presentation 1 

I tried switching "front" with "Topmost 1", I tried removing "window flags float" and tried the other too but no success...

I hope to find some help here. I'm a little bit familiar with Max and I realized some smaller projects (audio effects, basic signal generators, some utility devices). Now, I'm about to learn how to control Live via a M4L device and I run into some difficulties.

My goal: I want to create a floating Max for Live device which mirrors Live's native Echo device (for use under certain live conditions).

I started with the rather easy stuff. I did a replication of the Echo GUI and a patcher with a zoomable floating window. Next step, controlling the Live parameter. With success, I reused some examples to create a bidirectional control (see GIF).

My issue: In my configuration, I need to map the parameter I want to control manually. And the way I catch the device parameter seems pretty convoluted – especially when I start to control 30+ controls (see PNG).

My question: what might be the simplest way to get all the device parameter ID's of a Live device which is on the left from my Max for Live device? (There is a similar example in the Building Max Devices pack, but I can't adapt it for my needs)

I need help, please, to find a solution for: 

The user loads a folder with images in a Max for Live Device. 

I do not want the user to open the device and set the File Preferences...

I need a way to do it without opening the device. But... 

The  live.drop object won't work for this, since it does not work with folders, only with files. 

Even if I add  the folder in Ableton's project, it won't work, because there is not a specified file path in the Max/Options/File Preferences. 

Does anybody can provide a solution o guide to solve this issue ?

I try to use JavaScript & the Live API to interact with my Push-2 and experience a strange issue when I try to observe the controls, like the shift button e.g.

Getting access to the Push 2 works, also retrieving the LOM id of the Shift button works, but when I try to create a LiveAPI object from this LOM id, I get an error message : jsliveapi: get path: error calculating the path.

Strange enough : using the same LOM id in Max - sending it out via an outlet - with live.observe works : pushing the shift button delivers 0 or 127.

So the problem seems to be that LiveAPI in js cannot handle this LOM id correctly or I have to take another LiveAPI to get it going. 

Also strange : although the path cannot be resolved, the objects exists and when I retrieve the type I get sometimes different results : most of the time its a clip but recently I also got "ControlProxy", which might hint to something.

I guess the created LiveAPI object is random, as it cannot resolve the path (although its a valid LOM id) and then picks something up  randomly.
