My assumption is this mythical "later release" has NOT arrived yet, because the error message breadcrumbs I'm following led me straight to "is_foldable".  

Is it really still true an Instrument or Drum Rack Track's "is_foldable" property returns 0 even though "Rack Tracks" can be opened/closed?

How do M4L coders work around this issue?  

How can M4L otherwise detect a "Rack Track" in the Live session? 

Specifically, how can a patch tell if a "Rack Track" is opened or closed when it can't access the fold_state property because "is_foldable" returns 0?

Since both Max 5 and the current documentation say this about the Track class's  is_foldable property:

If I open this device, and then drag a file onto the drop file, so that the message box gets populated, and then save the device, Ableton will crash every single time. It seems like when the readfolder message is sent to polybuffer~ when the device is saved, that this causes Ableton to crash.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Hi! My students and I have run into the same problem. [polybuffer~] is unusable in  Max for Live. When saving a device, Live crashes.

I think it happens specifically when a polybuffer~ is automatically filled with the "readfolder" message, executed by a live.thisdevice.

Anyone else noticed this behaviour?

not to dig up an old thread but yes, readfolder with polybuffer crashing max4live, curiously only in live11 and not in live10 for me. 

tried to load up an old patch and whittled it down to polybuffer 

Just experienced the same thing with Ableton 11.1.1. Still nothing solved with this? 
What did you guys use instead to avoid the crash?

“It looks like I can stop the crashing if I give an initial second argument to [buffer table] inside your mc.gen~.

For example, [buffer bar table.1] inside mc.gen~ and then in [p wavespread], you could have the message "set value $1 bar $2"

If I set it up in this way, I can set which buffer of the polybuffer~ each voice of the mc.gen~ is using, and I don't get a crash.

Hey all, I have here a max patch that converts audio to MIDI. The Gain object is acting like a threshold and when audio is played, it will distinguish the next step in my simple sequencer. 

I would like to quantise the MIDI that is produced but am having trouble identifying where in the chain I can insert my metronome I have also created with different beat divitions.

Can anyone sugest how or where to attach my Transport clock to snap the MIDI produced?

So I use the latest Ableton Live Suite (12.1.5), and if I choose the bundled version under "Max Application", the devices that doesn't require Max 9 are working perfectly (the bundled version is Max 8), but if I choose the folder path of Max 9, only the plugins that require Max 9 are working. For example, the device called "Bouncy Notes" from the "Inspired By Nature" pack doesn't work after I switch to Max 9, even if I reinstall the whole pack. Is there something I could do, or do I need to wait until the bundled version of Live is updated to Max 9?

I've been dabbling with other people's m4l devices for a couple of years, but so far haven't tried making my own. I've been building stuff in Drambo on iOS and would like to make the jump to m4l. As a first tiny project, I'd like to build a device that can send a signal to a mappable control when receiving a note on. I'd like to have a button like eg the live LFO for the mapping. I figured out, that I can get the note on from the midiparse object, but am lost about what to do next. Would love some beginner friendly advice. Thanks in advance.

I've noticed other peoples patch when viewed in Live have a fixed width even though objects are outside this area when viewed in max editing mode.

does anyone know how this width is set as my devices extend out to whereever the objects are even if they are not included in presentation mode or above the vertical device limit area?

In the Patcher Inspector make sure that 'Open in Presentation' is checked.


and after that, go to the view menu and choose 'set device width', then you can hover your mouse over the edge of the device size box and resize it rather than relying on the auto size feature.


I have a problem with the size of the presentation mode of a M4L patch in Ableton.
I joined the three screen captures. As you can see they aren't similar, the "1/4 comment" and the "float object" even if they seem to fix in the size of presentation mode in the M4L patch in Max, they don't appear in the M4L device in Ableton. . I don't know how to fix this size.
The information below doesn't work for me. Sorry. I can change the size in Max patch but nothing changes in Ableton device!!!

When I have a max for live device that contains a vst~ object, I can send the device MIDI and CCs with no issue, but when I make it so that the device instead loads the vst~ using javascript (after the max for live device is loaded) then sending CCs or fast amounts of MIDI causes the visuals of Ableton Live to slow down to about 5fps. Does anyone know what's causing this, and there's a way fix?

While using Max for Live in Ableton Live, I discovered some serious bugs in the vst~ object in newer versions of Max. These bugs do not occur in Ableton Live 11 Suite (which comes with Max version 8.5.8). Similarly, replacing the built-in Max in Ableton Live 12 Suite with Max 8.5.8 or using an external Max 8.5.8 in Ableton Live's preferences also avoids these bugs. Therefore, it can be confirmed that these bugs originate from Max rather than Ableton Live. The details are as follows:

I have a midi controller with a grid of programmable buttons. Besides sending a midi message when a button is pressed, I can also send a midi message to the controller to light up a specific button. 

I want to use this grid to light up the index of the clip playing for a certain track and also to be able to trigger the same clip. 

I want this to work regardless if I trigger a clip from the Ableton UI or the controller. This means that just maintaining the state of the controller is not an option, instead I would want to monitor (or poll) the playing state of each clip slot and respond to changes. 

I have created a patch that does this but I am getting this error: 

live.object: Setting the Id cannot be triggered by notifications. You will need to defer your response.

I have tried to put a deferlow at different places in the patch. I have also tried to use pipe to delay different parts. None has worked.
