 Video 2 new MIDI Tools transformers are shown, that work on MPE data : Glissando on Pitch-Bend and LFO on what ever MPE specific CC you choose (Pitch Bend, Slide or Pressure).

But I don't see any API that would a Max for Live MIDI Tool developer allow to read this MIDI CC data nor write them.

Do I miss something or has Ableton just a "private only" backdoor to its own product?

If the latter is true, I hope this MIDI CC API will be added to the public Live API soon, not only for MIDI Tools, but also for normal Clips - this would unlock a lot of creative use cases.

Doing this via generating MIDI CC messages inside a normal Max for Live device and recording them on another Track is way to workaround this missing API for MIDI Clips, but its cumbersome and prevents some creative codings come to live (or Live ;-).

I am working on a M4L patch that allows for dynamic precision control of any Live device parameter, that overcomes the limitations of 7-bit Midi on the one hand and the unhandy range of 16383 values with fixed precision rotary encoders in 14-bit mode on the other. But what I need is continuous input for relative CC message values and while Max standalone Midi driver seems to deliver that, Max 4 Live seems to filter them out, probably because it does not recognize that repeatedly sending the same message in relative mode means a change while in absolute mode it would not. This is true for "midiin" and "ctlin"

Example: Turning a controller slowly up from 0 gives you the following series of values:

Relative: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1  (well, actual coding depends on implementation of relative values)

In Max "midiin" and "ctlin" do send each and every "1". M4L on the other hand only sends the first "1" and swallows the following ones, while I see on the Midi-Input-Signal in Live's upper-right corner, that the messages are received. :(

Motivation: I'm using a Novation 49SL MkII controller keyboard. It's rotary encoders can be set up to send CC messages realizing 14 bit absolute values using two CCs. One would expect babyskin smooth controller input with 14-bit - and in fact, you really get that. But the rotary encoder still only counts 1 up or 1 down approximately 50 times per revolution of the knob. That makes more than 327 turns to go from the lower end to the upper end of the parameter range. How would you need to move that cut-off from 50Hz to 10kHz? Get it? It's no use.

What we really need is a high resolution controller with fixed upper and lower bounds. This seems to be a technical problem because of noise. It's the domain of analog devices (Man, do I love my Monotron).

I wan't to simulate that using dynamic relative CC input. That means turning the knob faster results in bigger relative values. The SL MkII realizes this in modes (DispType) "APOT" and "Rel2". I have managed to decode the dynamic APOT messages in live and translate them to values of the kind 1,6,12,20,2,-1,-4, and so on. By accumulating the values and scaling the min and max range to the parameter range, I basically get what I want. But when I turn the knob at constant speed, Live swallows all equal CC messages in a series but the first one and nothing get's accumulated. The controller sends all the time, Live receives, but nothing is output by "midiin" or "ctlin". No message, no bang. Even a bang would be enough for a start.

Does anyone know, how to work around this in M4L?

EDIT: I am aware of the relative midi input modes in Live which are recognized when you activate Midi-Learn. But these do not increase the parameter precision. The accumulated input values stay in the range of 0-127 of a midi controller. That's why I'm working on a patch that reads the relative values so I can use my own cumulation formula with arbitrary precision.

I'm building a Max for Live device that walks the Live Object Model on set load — reading every track, device, and device parameter to maintain a live session mirror over a local WebSocket. On heavy sets (30+ tracks, 80+ devices, thousands of parameters), the initial walk beachballs Ableton for ~45 seconds.

  The root cause is well-understood: every new LiveAPI(...), .get(), .call(), and .property from the js object is a synchronous round-trip to Live's main thread. The js engine runs on the low-priority thread, but that doesn't help — the LiveAPI calls still block Live's UI thread while they complete. There's no way to batch reads or issue them asynchronously.

  I've thrown every optimization I can at this from the M4L side:

  - Retargeting hot handles instead of constructing new LiveAPI objects (each new LiveAPI registers in a per-device table that never shrinks, and its lookup degrades to a linked-list crawl at scale)

  - Per-tick operation budgets with resume cursors so periodic sweeps have constant main-thread cost

  - Dirty-flag gating so reconcile passes only read what actually changed

  - Deferring parameter attachment out of observer callbacks into coalesced Tasks

  - Caching stable facts (property names, track types) to avoid redundant probes

  These help with steady-state performance, but the initial walk is irreducible — you genuinely need to read every track, every device, and every parameter at least once, and each read is a synchronous IPC to Live's main thread.

  1. Batched reads — a single call that takes an array of LOM paths + property names and returns all values in one round-trip, instead of one IPC per .get().

  2. Async LiveAPI — .getAsync() / .callAsync() that return Promises and don't block Live's main thread while the js engine waits. Even if the reads themselves are still serialized on Live's side, decoupling the js wait from the main thread would eliminate the beachball.

  3. Bulk snapshot — something like LiveAPI.snapshot(path, depth) that returns a JSON tree of an object and its children's properties in one call.

  Any one of these would be transformative for M4L devices that need to read the session state comprehensively. The current model — one synchronous IPC per property read, no batching, no async — makes it effectively impossible to build responsive M4L tools for large sessions.

  Is there any interest in this direction, or any workarounds I've missed? Happy to provide profiling data or a minimal repro.

Wondering if any of you smart people know how I might get dynamic string values displayed on my Push 3's screen as parameter names?

I've built quite a robust A/V performance system using Ableton/Push and Touchdesigner for visuals. On the Touchdesigner side, I dynamically load different visual generators based on the currently playing Live clip. Each visual has its own unique set of parameters. I control them via Macro dials on a TDA Rack device (Touchdesigner Ableton plugin which just sends dial values back & forth over OSC). I then perform live manipulation of the parameters via the knobs on Push. For system performance reasons, I reuse the same device Macro dials for each visual. This works great, but the names displayed on the Macros/Push are static. I want to be see what I am controlling from the Push display and have these names update when I switch between visuals.
