First of all a quick disclaimer: I haven’t picked up Max in about 3 years so i feel like my skill level is right back to basics.

Im helping my friend create an art installation based on the symmetry found in audible frequencies, and they thought that a Chladni plate is a perfect place to turn to for this. What they need is the pattern a Chladni plate creates from specific frequencies.

I came across Graham Wakefields patch and while i can tell its brilliant, I honestly don’t understand it at all.

What I need to know is if its possible to get Grahams patch to display the pattern for a specific hz value. Is this already something the patch can do, and I’m just missing it? Or is it an easy thing to implement?

i don't know if they are referring to specific 'hz values' but they seem to: just below the 'p auto' subpatcher near the top-right of the patch, if you turn off the toggle above that(so that they don't keep automatically changing), you can then change the numbers in the two number boxes below that, and the patterns will draw consistently according to those 'frequencies'.

Yeah i saw those too. My problem is that they arent hz values. If i could find out what value they represent, and how i can then translate that into hz then i think im sorted.

no worries, i figured i wouldn't know the equation well enough to see that the 'm' and 'n' variables in the equation were not relating to frequencies...(i just wonder how we arrive at a place where we don't know what value they represent at all, but whatever they are, we're sure they're not 'hz' values? what else could 'm' and 'n' be?)... also, at no point did i 'just get a random pattern', i used the same numbers, to get the same exact result(goes against the definition of 'random').

but ya, the frequencies variables need to be revealed in the original equation itself(y/l and x/l seem like scaling coefficients to range the results within the coordinate system, so what could 'm' and 'n' be?), feel free to let us know if you ever figure it out:

"cos(n pi x / L) cos(m pi y / L) - cos(m pi x / L) cos(n pi y / L)"
