I'm trying to count the repetitive opposites of an incoming realtime stream of symbols that are either "up" or "down".

So for example, if the stream is up, down, up, down, (4 opposites) that would count 4. When an up or down is repeated, it resets to zero.

I've made something that functions, but it's extremely ugly, and uses three counter objects to work. Wondering if anyone can think of a more elegant solution.

you can save a few objects here by using different ones, but i am not sure if it made a big difference.

look into [onebang] maybe, i would build it around that.

I think this does what you want, but as Roman said, it only saves a few objects:

In patch you posted and the other one, it works only if there are no jumps in values

It is easy to tell if one clicked inc or dec, needs no number compairing.

But for real stream of numbers you need inc-dec split, no matter

how large difference between last 2 received values is.

In this case, there's only ever 2 values which are 2 symbols of either "up" or "down". So does that mean you have a simpler way to do it than what Bill suggested?
