Disable Retina HiDPI for better performance

Hi forum,

I experienced a lot of glitches with medium to high load patches in combination with general UI interaction. For instance, when running Ableton next to Max, switching it full screen and back would cause clicks and pops. Very annoying.

After extensive research and trial & error I found out that the Retina features were causing this behaviour, and that there is actually a very simple and elegant solution: install a third party display manager and select a resolution without HiDPI (Within OSX system config this isn't possible or you need to be a terminal geek).

This decreases the processing of the display enormously. It basically makes your display act as a low res non-retina one. I totally got rid of the glitches.

There are a couple third party apps for this. I use ResolutionTab which you can purchase for 2,- at the App Store.

And no, opening Max and/or other apps in low resolution mode didn't help (as much) as hacking the system resolution.

These findings made me very happy so I thought I would share it with you!

Cheers,

Sono
