DJ VJ Audio-Visual-Performance
hi there,
i´m a student for visual communication in berlin (udk) and also new into this field of media arts and realtime visualization. I´m doing my final project right now (only 2 months left) and i´m not sure what is the best solution for this case.
The project is about a costumade dj/vj perfomance, which allows to play as a DJ and a VJ at the same time but with keeping the focus on the music so that the visuals (live generated and pre-produced clips and images) follow the parameters and metadata of an ableton dj set.
I design a couple of themes for different genres in the electronic music dance music field. Disco, House, Techno, Minimal, etc. Each with a unique design that include additional parameters like label or dedace info to catch the mood of the sound. For that kind of design i´m not sure if i really need a modular system like max msp / jitter or could I also use a "normal" vj software like resolome? I never saw vj softwares with live generated graphics. Maybe someone could me a tip, what is possible here. I have no experience in programming and definitly need a programmer or better a programmer who is also a vj.
I have my doubts that a normal vj software allows costum live-generated graphics and automatically follows the ableton parameters. And as an ableton user the bridge to max was for my logic consequence.
You also can PM me.
Thanks a lot for your feedback
Best Mario
Well, surely with Max and Max For Live you could build your own VJ generative software, but this could be a pretty hard task for a beginner in such short time.
Thinking about your needs, I think VDMX could be a good solution for you (I don't know Resolume or Modul8 enough to tell they have generative modules either), synching it with Live via OSC (there's a bunch of M4L devices to send/receive OSC in Live).
Resolume can run Quartz Composer patches. You load them in clip slots like videos.
Btw, good luck getting this done in 2 months ;)
there are no pm's possible on this forum. i use max jitter to create live generated visuals (f.e. https://vimeo.com/101154549 , but also in more abstract ways) , whole last week i worked together with a musician who was working with ableton, taking his musical information as control data for particle based visual patches. not familiar with ableton myself, i am interested myself to learn the basics how to create some cool techno music with it... So i could offer you following deal: We could meet this week or weekend (from next week i am not in germany) three days somewhere in Berlin or in my studio near Frankfurt, and you give me a three day chrash course in Ableton Live and techno beats. You also buy me the full Ableton Live Suite 9. In reverse i programme you an app that does what you need within 10 following days. If you are interested, my email is tobias[at]tobiasrosenberger.de
all the best
