DMX Problems - Native way to see/test output?
After seeing c74's great blog on working with DMX a few years ago, and after getting some wonderful help and suggestions from David Butler on the forum I've been happily DMX-ing away in most of my performances and videos.
The whole time I've been using a DMXKing interface, and all has been well.
Until now. I've tried plugging all my stuff in, and I'm getting nothing at all.
I've tried ruling out all points of failure by checking on different computers/OSs, different ethernet/DMX/USB cables, different versions of Max (6/7, 32/64), and different versions of imp.artnet.controller (v1.0, and v0.5 (I think?), different DMX lamps, etc... and nothing at all. I've also verified that my lamp is working by running through the generic user presets.
I've emailed DMXKing to see if they have any thoughts on the hardware side (maybe resetting the unit or something?), but I was wondering if there was anything else I can do to test on the software side. Like a way to monitor what is actually being sent.
This is the super naked test patch I'm using:
And my DMX lamp is set to receive starting on channel 200, and is in 4-channel mode.
The video link won't be up for very long, but I made a video showing the setup/problem:

So imp.artnet.controller is connecting to the device fine it seems (no errors in Max), and the yellow 'networkfound' light is lit on the interface. The LED also flashes on the interface, so it appears DMX is making it's way out to the device, but then nothing beyond that....
Hah, that crazy DMX, always up to no good...
Well, good news is that DMXKing wrong back and are talking me through some steps, so will see if that goes anywhere. Also borrowing a friends DMXKing interface (newer one) to see if I get any joy there.
Hi, sorry to hijack your thread, but I am looking into DMX interfaces for my own project, and DMXKing seems a nice affordable option. Was wondering if you can confirm if it works with Max 7, using the imp.dmx external from David Butler? (Or at least if it used to, since you seem to have issues right now)
I got a bit confused about if it is compatible with Max 7, since the enttec website stating their own externals are no longer updated, and I can't seem to find recent information on imp.dmx.
Yup, it sure does.
And to round out this thread, the problem was a specific instance of the imp.artnet external. I don't know if it's because it got corrupted moving it to a new computer or something, but after downloading it again (same version), everything was working fine.
Weird!
Ok thanks for confirming! Will probably go the DMXKing route then :)
