Emulating quirks of old Boss digital delay pedal

I'm trying to emulate the quirks of my Boss delay pedal. As seen in the video below, when you adjust the delay time, silent gaps are inserted into the delay line.
Does anyone know how to emulate this in Max?

I've created a general emulation of this pedal already by modifying the patch from the "delay with feedback" tutorial. But when adjusting the delay knob, the delays, clicks, and stutters just keep building up and getting more dense until it's a wash of sound. With the Boss pedal, if you continuously adjust the knob eventually you'll get mostly silence (like at the end of this video).
