ENTTEC Open DMX USB

André Rangel's icon

Hello, did anyone managed to send DMX messages from MAX via ENTTEC Open DMX USB successfully?

Thanks in advance,

André

Hi, tested with Max 8.0.5 -Mac Osx 10.14.5 dmxusbpro 1.5, it is ok. Now I haven't at disposal Dmx Lighting, but communication test is ok and some of my students are using just now another one in an installation.
Ciao,

The model I tested (max6,7, 8) is Enttec dmx Usbpro, sorry..

If you use QLC+ as in intermediary you can talk MIDI/OSC from max to QLC, and QLC will happily talk to the Open DMX USB.

Here's a video I made on the subject so I could remember how to do it when I inevitably forget - https://youtu.be/9OX_fxcu4qY

The one thing the video does not explicitly show you is that you need to select the Open DMX as an output in the "Input/Outputs" tab.

Thank you very much Snicker!!! I really wanted a diret way, MAX to Open DMX.. but this workaround will do it ;) It's to help a friend that bought recently such an interface... I used Lanbox LCX since 2003 and... it never let me down ;)

Yeah with the lack of a working external for the Open DMX I found this was the 'easiest' way to make it work :)

hello people, any update on using the ENTTEC Open DMX USB with Max directly? I am just about to purchage ENTTEC Open DMX USB and would like to know if it is good option with max or I should directly go to the pro version.
Best Cheers

I can only say that the Usbpro version works perfectly with Max.

@Riccardo Dapelo thanx!
any direction to which object to use? Any patch available out there?
Much appreciated!

Hi, here's the patch by Olivier Pasquet that simply runs on a serial obj:

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

On MacOsx (maybe also on Windows?) I guess you need to install the Ftdi Driver to see the interface through the serial obj

@Riccardo Thank you
I found a similar version of the from Pasquet's post but good to confirm this is the actual one.

Not sure about the Ftdi Driver, what you refer to. Any clarifications please?

I'm not sure , because it' a very long time that I use the Enttec DmxusbPro, but I think that I have installed the FTDIUsbserial driver the first time I connected the interface.
Here the download:
https://ftdichip.com/drivers/vcp-drivers/
Anyway if you have the interface give a test without the driver and if you dont see it install the driver

I got it working for a couple of months now. The device has enough information to make it work and then it is not too difficult to connect it with Max.
Yes, you need to instal the drivers but this is part of the instructions of ENTTEC.
However, the Mac version is a bit buggy in terms of interface though it still works fine.

@Phivos - I have an RGB fixture here connected to the open DMX USB. It is set to three channel mode RGB and QLC+ with three sliders controls it fine. Pasquet 's patch looks to send those first three channels as sliders two three and four with the first slider determining the universe. I'm new to DMX but it seems to me the slider should be equivalent. However I'm getting nothing out and I do have the drivers installed of course. Did you need to modify his patch in any way? any help much appreciated. I want to drive this directly from Max.

Phivos-Angelos Kollias's icon

Hey there @Shane
you have to update/install the FTDIUsbserial first
It seems to work with some bugs but it does the job
good luck!

yes I did actually already have that installed and clicked the link it said that I had the most recent version for the drivers. One thing I notice is with QLC+ the lights have a constant receiving LED. Out of Max there is nothing. The rep at Enttech said the pro keeps a constant stream going. I don't know if this is what's wrong but you seem to be getting DMX out already with the posted patch. The pro should arrive tomorrow I'll see if it's behavior seems to be different.

I am not sure if it works with the pro version.

I am currently travelling so I do not have the equipment with me to do another test

I have been working with both and my experience with the DMX USB Pro and Max (7 and 8) via the serial object is flawless.
I never managed to make the Open DMS USB work directly with Max, I had to go through QLC+ via MIDI or OSC.
Will follow-up on this thread if you guys figure out something :)

I'm in crunch time with a client and so am using the EMU VST which does work but I don't really like it. Of course I'd like to come straight out of Max. My initial test even with the DMX USB Pro was that I was still getting intermittent fluctuations in dropouts even if I was just telling the light to turn red sending three channel RGB. I look forward to the chill time when I can sit down and fiddle. I'll report back here. One other point to note, which is probably a DMX flaw itself, is that I can't manually strobe even at low rates without crazy aliasing. I've been told the DMX rate is around 40 Hz. This still means I should be able to strobe up to 19 Hz and be fine via direct driving it with RGB messages. I can't even seem to get past 4 Hz though.

I've used the DMX USB Pro a lot in Max. There's two main approaches I've used - with the serial object, or with ola. Ola is part of homebrew (I'm sure you can install it without a package manager), and I've found it very good for interfacing with a load of different DMX devices. It basically creates an internal artnet device that you send to from any artnet compatible application on your computer (i.e. using the artnet externals in max), and then interfaces with your USB DMX interface. I've run installations with several years of continuous uptime using this (although I'd also report similar reliability from the DMX USB Pro Mk2 over serial as well). What's nice about using artnet is it feels fairly foolproof, and ola is DMX interface agnostic.

Hello, people, thank you for all this infos, but at the end I do not understand if @Phivos managed to comunicate vis DMX with the Open DMX USB device (NOT PRO), because I did not succeed.
@Shane? what about you?
I installed the driver and loaded the patch by Olivier Pasquet, but nothing so far (and in the patch it is written that it is made for the PRO).
So what? Should I buy the PRO version to control lights directly out of Max?
A word will save me! thank you all.

Antonio

Mac OS 10.15.7 and Max 8.2.1

@ADMANT
hello,
I finally used the PRO version and works fine
I did not try the open version as it was reported problematic with MAX
if you have the option, better get the PRO version
good luck,
Phivos

Hi everyone!

I try to start working with enttec usb dmx. I tried the pro AND the open one.
For both i've the same problem: i can't access to the COM ports on my computer. I followed every instructions given by FTDI and enttec. I finally managed to make a few COM ports appears in my Device manager but not the serial one. So when i try to acces ports in max it says ''specified port not available'' or ''error opening serial port''.
I'm working with windows 11 x64 on a PC.
Please do someone had the same issues?
Thanks
