is there a simple way to know if an outlet has any cables connected to it from the API ? And, if it's the case, is it a costly check to do ? I have some long processes which need not run if nothing is connected to the output.

It is easy (and cheap) to do this for signal connections in audio objects (in the dsp method). For non-audio objects it is quite a challenge.
