Extending the functionality of Midi Control Surfaces that use the Mackie Control Protocol

I have just discovered MaxMSP and I am interested in its use to extend the functionality of Midi Control Surfaces. In particular, I have both a Behringer X-Touch Midi Controller and a Nektar Panorama P1 Midi Controller. Both of these controllers provide a reasonable amount of support for control DAWs (Digitial Audio Workstations) using Mackie Control and HUI protocols. However, to both extend the control of DAWs and to make up for shortcomings in the implementation of the Mackie Control Protocol, I would like to know, before I embark on a development project, if broadly speaking MaxMSP is a tool that will enable this requirement. Basically what I am hoping is that the sending of midi command or message from a controller connected to a computer can be intercepted and converted into a new stream of midi commands or messages before being forwarded to the any DAW software.
